Alum: Overall, I had a decently positive experience throughout my high school career. Though COVID hit its height during the middle of my freshman year and the entirety of sophomore year and thus, we were unable to attend in person, my last two years were fun. School spirit, especially around sports, was always high and I feel that it increased significantly after we were fully back to in person learning. One thing I'd definitely want to see change is more funding towards the music department. As someone who was an active part of music groups throughout high school and became close with the departments' instructors, I got to learn how poorly and underfunded it was even after constant requests for support, which is unfortunate as music is something many students, including myself are passionate about.... Senior: Overall, my time in high school has been quite enjoyable. Despite the demanding and frequently grueling nature of schoolwork, I have been able to develop close relationships with my friends as a result. The atmosphere that the school fosters is one of my favorite features. Everybody sticks together and gets along. Furthermore there are lots of events and clubs that help connect you to your peers. I found a community for myself in the Yonkers High talent show and later on when I was in my junior year the gala, a multicultural performance my school puts on. My effort in the gala paid off when I was appointed as the captain of the gala. While the organizing of such and event is quite chaotic and stressful it ultimately ended in an amazing performance. Senior: My experience with varsity soccer has been memorable and beautiful. As a three-year starter, I was able to build a beautiful and closely knit relationship with my coach: Sandro. Sandro not only recognized the skill, technique, and game awareness that I possessed, but also, the person that I truly was at heart. He was able to unlock the leadership skills that I didn't know I had within me. As a result of this, I grew into a captain and took control of the mindset that our team brought to each and every game. Parent: Tuckahoe schools are totally under-rated. My kids have been in the district since Cottle, and have had exceptional teachers throughout. Our experience has mostly been with the academic and music programs, but I know people rave about the sports offerings as well. As for us, we’re now at the high school, and both kids are at the top of their classes. THS has a new Principal, Mr. Arthur, who started this year and immediately made it possible for my oldest to take an AP course that the school didn’t offer. His emphasis on scholarship promises to make this terrific school even better. I also have to make a plug for the Strings program, led by Charles DuChateau. Senior: Best parts- I loved the different learning styles provided by the teachers. Some would do flipped classrooms, teach from the back of the room over a projector, some would do notes every day and teach at the front, etc Worst parts- The facilities could be upgraded and the wifi is horrible. The school food isn't the best but it is typical school food. Change?- I would love to see more diversity and opportunities from the school to learn more about college, majors, and what the major steps are. Also, it would be great if there was a "practical" elective class that would teach real-world skills to high school students so they know how to do basic tasks such as an overview on taxes, eating healthy, planning time wisely, etc.... Senior: To me, I had a great experience at New Rochelle High School. I was involved in soccer for all four years that I was there, joined many clubs, and had great connections with all my teachers. This school does have a lot of great opportunities and holds around 3,200 students! Alum: This school would definitely be described as just that - an experience. It was almost hard to not choose 4 stars for all categories, as everything seems so close to being granted 5. And even though they spent a lot of money to make the school look nicer - which it does - unfortunately I know how low funding is for the extracurriculars in the town of Port Chester, considering most families are working-class minorities. And I say that with nothing but love in my heart for the town, since I am only the same. The town was full of good, valued people. I miss the safety I felt in the comfort of my home, and in that high school. When life wasn’t amazing for me, extracurriculars with my friends, and everlasting support from certain teachers made going all worth while. Musical theater, band and concert choir are all significant parts of the town, and I was part of all of them. That community is something I’ll never get back. Senior: I've had a good experience all four years of high school. There were some challenges along the way, but it helped to make me a better student. With the sudden threat of COVID and schools closing down, the staff and administration quickly devised a way to get us back on track and were still there for any academic or personal support that was needed. Niche User: What makes this school unique is that since it is a special education school, the students are automatically judged due to what they are told are "disabilities" and "hindrances". But despite society's judgement, the students still come together as a familial unit and they show a great deal of teamwork when it comes to school events. I played a part in helping to put the Yearbook together and everyone was willing to put their differences to the side in order to come together to create memories. It truly was great to be a part of such an uncommon but amazing community. I would do it all over again because I met so many amazing people from different walks of life and these people treated me like I was family before they even knew my name. Now granted, the staff could be more involved; sometimes it seems as though they're in their own world and all they care about is getting through the day rather than actually building with the students. But the school staff are also seen as family in the sense that they relate more to the students. At the end of it all, "Family" is the only word that can be used to describe this school.... Alum: Riverside could be a better school, but it was average for me. It is a very tech focused school which is good for students who want to go into stem, but there isn't much focus on anything else. There are some fantastic english and history teachers, but again the focus is more on tech. They were good with trying to help us get into colleges, but something that could be better is helping students reach outside of the bubble of colleges in Westchester, and to push them to go to school elsewhere and even study abroad.... Parent: We transferred our son to PHS in January of 2021 from a private Catholic school. The experience we’ve had at PHS this past year is extraordinary. Every single person we have interacted with in this school, teachers, counselors, nurses, even the School District Superintendent, they’ve all been super helpful, caring, professional and extremely dedicated to the success of their students. The counselor assigned to my son, Ms. Michele Rios, has gone above and beyond to ensure my son’s transition into the school was as easy and stress free as possible. Her responses to my emails (and a million questions) were always prompt, detailed, informative and displayed a level of care and dedication I never once saw in the private schools. Senior: Mt Vernon High School has really improved as the years go on. When I first joined the school there was a bomb threat, a stabbing, kids bring in guns, and etc. There were police at our school almost everyday. There was a really big safety issue that was mostly the student body’s fault. Though the school had a big safety issue they had multiple sports that you could join or be involved in.The athletics in the school throughout all of my years were mostly a 10/10. Now the school is a lot more safe. There are less fights, we haven’t had a weapon accident or any threats so far, and Ive only seen the police once this year. Not only is the safety better but the student involvement is too. There are more clubs/activities to chose from, more academic help, and more school trips. This year you can really tell the administrators and trying their best to make this high school the best it can be for its students.
