SHS is a fairly balanced school, that is relatively different from other best high schools in the bay area. Although STEM is also very strong, but overall, it pays a lots of attention to the cultivation of children's abilities in other aspects. There are many clubs in the school, and you will be amazed at the high level of the band, the dance group, the speach club, the robot etc. Children who can develop well here must have very strong self-reliance. Because many things have to be managed by the students themselves.Rather than being like many top private schools, in fact, most of them are arranged and promoted by teachers. Another point is that city of Saratoga itself is a very nice place to live, and it can be said to be one of the best communities in the whole San Francisco Bay Area. Most of the students come from families with similar backgrounds. Families would sincerely invest in building a better school, because a good school will also lead to a better community.
Saratoga High School is very strong in academics. They have a countless selection of AP and Honors courses to choose from and the teachers are very supportive. All of the extracurricular programs are very well funded (especially performing arts) and there are many options for clubs and student-led organizations. It’s the best of the best for those activities. There is a very diverse student body and you can expect to meet people of all different backgrounds. However, socially speaking, it can be a bit tricky to find the right friends who will truly support you 100% of the way. Sometimes you have to do a little digging to find your people, and sometimes people aren’t what they seem and unfortunately lack a certain level of empathy due to their well-off backgrounds. The school culture is very skewed because of this. In terms of resources for student health, Saratoga High School has been a little rocky, but is slowly (but surely) going on an upwards trend.
As a senior at Saratoga High, I've realized that much of the praise it receives is undeserved. Saratoga students are hardworking, most come from immigrant families, and given the outside resources they can obtain with a high economic status (private tutoring, violin lessons, SAT prep), they are naturally high achieving regardless of how the school functions. The teachers themselves are nothing special; some are truly amazing people but too many are downright mediocre. My biggest issue with Saratoga is that it offers little support. Very few teachers provide adequate help if you need it, and in terms of mental health assistance, admin will simply redirect you to CASSY and expect everything to be resolved. My counselor has done the bare minimum, if not less, and usually leaves me more conflicted than reassured; she is known among students for her passive aggressive demeanor. While I do feel prepared for college, shs has taken a massive toll on my mental health.
