I have been at Avenues since the beginning (11 years!) and have become very comfortable with the people and environment. There are many things I love about Avenues, but the Global Journeys programs and Harkness-style classes are two of my favorite aspects. Just this January J-term, I went on a Global Journeys program to Senegal. In small groups, we stayed with homestay families, communicating with them in broken French and hand gestures. Through this experience, we learned more about their culture and gained confidence in dealing with unusual situations. This trip also brought my and my peers closer together—I love waving whenever I see them in the hallways! Another thing that I love about Avenues is the discussion-based classes. In English and World classes, discussing material (plot, themes, historical movements, etc) helps me formulate my ideas and speak succinctly. This skill, along with collaboration and flexibility, are fundamental strengths that I have developed at Avenues.

Review Avenues The World School

Our children were enrolled in Avenues the first year it opened, but all left by 6th grade because they felt they weren't learning much -- which was confirmed when they moved to more established NYC private schools that truly taught them! Once they moved schools, they also realized how terrible the student culture had been at Avenues. The school did little to focus on teaching or reinforcing character, was full of very privileged children whose parents did not always value education, and was staffed with inexperienced teachers. To this day, our kids regret our choosing Avenues for them before they had a voice.

I (a middle school student) think that Avenues is a stellar school focusing on bilingual learning and utilizing new education techniques to help students discover problem-solving skills and gain much insight into hard work and dedication. As well as the opportunity to explore so many different passionately cannot speak to the experience in high school, however, I have heard that Avenues provides great opportunities throughout the entire school experience including Global Journeys, Mastery learning program, and STEM math. As well as this school's ability to place students in the right classes for their abilities and passion, another thing that makes Avenues so great is that my teachers have consistently been supportive and great communicators.
The school is constantly evolving, which means that it can be difficult to adjust to an environment that changes a lot, however, I think this is a strength because there are so many different learning paths being implemented into the curriculum.
