Middle school student: I am a student that was at Black Rock Middle School for my seventh grade year and I will be back for my eighth grade. It’s a new school so there are things that will change and are different. One thing that I saw was very cool was how all of the teachers and student council members were trying very hard to build our new community. We had many fund raisers that made tons of money for organizations such as Alex’s Lemonade Stand. My courses and teachers were all very great too, except one. Math. I was in the advanced class called “Integrated I.” It was great except one thing. IXLs. They are a bad way of teaching students key concepts. The point system is degrading and it hurts many students mental health. Another problem that I saw arise was discipline. In the new school, with its open spaces and cool new furniture came issues with students thinking they were entitled to not cleanup after themselves. Parent: Mt. Lebanon School District is an great choice for families looking for a high-quality education. As a resident for 15 years, I have had the pleasure of watching my two children thrive academically and socially in Mt. Lebanon. The teachers are dedicated and care about the success of each student. They provide a challenging and stimulating curriculum that has prepared my children well for college. The counselors are also top-notch and have provided valuable guidance and support throughout the college application process for my older son. Senior: My time at Upper St. Clair High School has been marked by exceptional academic opportunities and dedicated teachers. However, it's not without its challenges, as some students display entitlement and foster a sense of superiority. This elitist atmosphere can be disheartening. Fortunately, I've been blessed with two amazing friends, Hannah and Rowan, who have been my unwavering support system. They've helped me stay positive and provided a sense of belonging in this sometimes toxic environment. Together, we've faced these challenges, and their friendship has been a guiding light throughout my high school journey. Freshman: This school district is wonderful. It's full of accepting students who truly care. The teachers are great! We do lack in racial and cultural diversity though. We have only one black teacher in the high school (Spanish teacher). Every other teacher in the high school, to my knowledge is white. Senior: The quality of education provided here is exceptional. This school provides a litany of AP, honors, and CHS classes. Most of the teachers are phenomenal; they are compassionate, engaging, and always more than willing to help. Many of the teachers are experts in their field. There are a few bad teachers who should have retired (or in a few cases been let go) long ago, and they are protected by the administration who refuses to do anything about them. The guidance department is helpful and was invaluable to me when I was applying to colleges. Many of the students are quite science-focused, and as a humanities lover myself I found that there were very limited extracurricular and elective options in the humanities. Most academic clubs are science- or technology-related. Parent: It is HUGE, but the elementary and middle schools are broken up into smaller groups. The teachers on the whole are excellent and care about their students wellbeing as much (if not more) than their academic performance. The high school teachers not necessarily as much, but most of them are really good! I refused to move anywhere else due to the school district being so excellent. Sophomore: I really liked how inclusive it was. There was a lot of focus on being a close and welcoming community. The district also provided many opportunities for the students to help the community and be involved in service. If I could change anything about the district, it would be the fact that there needs to be more addressing about mental health awareness. Also, I would make it so that everyone is given an equal opportunity to express their talents and skills. At many times, I felt like there were students who were not placed in the right math level, and they could do so much better if they were in a higher place. In other words, I think the district would be a lot better if it properly placed students into academic levels that best suited them rather than keeping all the students in one level. Senior: Very pleased with Wiss education starting with kindergarten all the way to being a high school senior. They made the transition to middle school and high school seamless and comforting. Senior: Hampton Township School district has connected me with some of the best teachers and coaches ever. Almost all the faculty and staff I interact with are highly qualified, want the best for their students, and are fantastic at their jobs. Some of my teachers go above and beyond to help me with my school work and as well as just being a friend. The sports at Hampton have connected me with great coaches and the friends I have made through extra curriculars and sports are some of the best friends I could ask for. One thing that Hampton could do better at is preparing us for the real world. We live in a bubble, and are protected from the worst things about life which is good, but I feel that the administration could do a better job at recognizing that students will soon become adults that will have to encounter real world problems. Senior: I have been in the district since first grade. I have thoroughly enjoyed the events that the district and schools have run, including assemblies, competitions, etc. However, I feel as though the infrastructure of the schools themselves could be improved. Many of the older schools are packed to capacity and are not a comfortable environment for the students to learn in. The newer schools are significantly nicer though, and provide a well-lit and spacious environment for students to be in. I think that the district continually improves upon the services it offers to its students, like counseling and mental health. Junior: New Hope-Solebury (NHS) is a very small high school, and I've seen a lot more benefits to that than negatives. NHS provides lots of opportunities to get involved in extracurriculars, leadership, and self-expression. Their academics are consistently ranked within the top 50 public schools in the state, and more often than not in the top 25. The faculty is very kind and willing to help all students. The sports programs at NHS are very small and are one of the weaker aspects of NHS, but the smaller environment gives everyone a chance to participate and for the stronger athletes to flourish. The smaller school environment allows for students to make friends easily within their classes and activities, and get involved in small groups through the many volunteer clubs at NHS. It seems as if all the staff members are on a collaborative mission to prepare the students for higher learning and they are succeeding in doing so.
