Alum: Penn Foster, online high school allowed me to work at my own pace through high school. I was able to thoroughly engage myself in my studies. The highlights of my experience through Penn Foster would be that I had the extra time to become more knowledgable in the subjects Im interested in. I was able to build my own schedule and focus on the subjects that pertain to my future career, and college major. The downsides of completing high school online is that I missed out on many of the exciting high school experiences, like prom, graduation, etc. Although I missed out on theses activities I wouldn't change my schooling.... Junior: I attended a brick and mortar school from kindergarten to my sophomore year in high school. Being a biracial person in a school that the majority of student were not biracial was difficult and many people did not like me. Switching to the virtual academy has created a new light in my education. I've found new passions for subjects like math, science, and even history. Parent: My son just finished 2 years of middle school in CCA. We love this school! All the teachers he's had have been wonderful and very helpful. Classes are engaging. All classes are taped which makes asynchronous learning a breeze. Edio is well organized and very user friendly, even for parents. They do a great job organizing field trips so students can socialize. I have two other children that went to two other cyber schools. CCA has been the best out of the three by far! They keep parents involved and informed. The #1 cyber high school on Niche never did that, even when my child was having issues I should have been notified of. The other cyber school's set up was just not very user friendly and did not have most classes recorded. I would give CCA 10 stars if I could because our experience with them has been so positive. Parent: Due to the Covid pandemic we used Epic for PreK & K. Our child thrived but we were concerned about the lack of social interactions and classroom structure. We live in one of the best districts in the state and decided to send our child to the local public school the next year. Huge mistake! Although friends were made and pe, music, etc were great, our child was so far ahead that nothing being taught was anywhere close to his level. After conversations with staff, we realized in comparison to Epic, the local school was more like a big daycare and only focused on bringing the children up to being “on level.” For students who were above that, they just were not given the challenges and attention they deserved. So we switched back to Epic. Immediately our child thrived again. The individualized attention and lesson plans absolutely have made a huge difference. Alum: My overall experience with Epic Charter High School was fairly decent due to the fact that it was online and the flexibility it offered for my schedule was great. You are still assigned a teacher that schedules your assignments and when they're due, but you do have the option do get through courses faster if you'd like, which I think is a great option. Since this is an online school, you are at home doing your schooling, so you don't have any extra curricular activities since there is no campus. However, the school does provide a certain amount of funds to use towards extra curricular activities and supplies of your choosing. For instance, I was able to take dance classes at a local dance studio and purchase supplies on Amazon using my funds. So that was very nice. The main issue I had with Epic was their lack of organization at an administrative level. They could be more organized in planning events and activities such as Senior Grad Night. Senior: GCA saved my life. I attended public school for a short time, from Pre-k- 5th grade. I was already being bullied and tormented daily at school in 5th grade. I was judged for being different, and having a big imagination. I eventually merged to GCA, and not only did my grades increase tremendously, but my mental health did too. Niche User: A wonderful program to use, would highly recommend it to anyone. The courses allowed me to work at my own pace and provided a dense amount of material that was also straightforward and easy to understand. Sophomore: When I started my journey at Texas Virtual Academy at Hallsville, the system was tricky to learn. Certain aspects including turning in assignments, taking tests, and attending live classes came with little to no directions on how to accurately perform each. Junior: Reach Cyber Charter is such an extraordinary school! At first, I went to the school so I wouldn't be at risk during the pandemic. I chose to stay at Reach because they have several educational opportunities that aren't available at other schools. The best thing about Reach is the options! There are endless academic choices regarding what classes you take and how you can graduate. The teachers work hard to help me gain the resources to succeed. The school counselors do everything they can to prepare me for life after high school (college, trade school, military, etcetera). The students are so supportive of each other. Seeing such a diverse group of students be so kind to one another is refreshing. The only thing I dislike about Reach is how difficult it can be for some people to make friends. Junior: I started attending Texas Connections four years ago. It has been amazing to help me pursue my hockey dreams. I love the flexibility of the classes. It makes it so much easier to get ahead before going out of state for tournaments. When my teammates who attend public classes are stressing over missing assignments and missed days, I can focus on preparing for my games instead. It also helps with college readiness by learning to manage time and assignments on my own. The teachers are always there to help with things you may struggle to understand in the lessons. And they’re always willing to get on a phone call or a zoom call as well. The only thing I would love to see changed is the elective choices. Sophomore: I spent my sophomore year of college studying with Liberty University's Online Academy for the purpose of completing my general education courses before moving up to their campus in Virginia. I really enjoyed the experience. I was never required to attend class zoom meetings, which meant I had time to work some and help my family while in school. A complaint I have against the structure of the program is how inaccessible the professors are, at least in the classes I took. If I felt lost or needed help on an assignment, there was no guarantee I could get a hold of a professor before the deadline. Thankfully, the coursework was laid out in a pretty easily understood manner, and directions for projects were clear. Senior: My school has a wide offer of extracurricular opportunities thanks to the money we are given to spend each semester. In doing so, each student has the ability to explore any field of study or project- something I find incredibly useful in terms of education. No other school that I have attended has given this type of offer to its students. The teachers at Visions are very kind, and work to ensure that each of their students' voices are heard. The only complaints I have are the following: first off, the high school history and government curriculum doesn't seem to be very inclusive of various types of ethnicity's and races. Another student and I are currently working on a project to introduce more inclusive books to the curriculum. My other complaint regards a chemistry teacher that works at the school, whom of which seems to not treat his students very fairly. Junior: I was a Primavera student from the last half of my 8th grade school year till the end of my junior year. I enjoyed my time at this school. It was very easy to get assistance from the Primavera teachers and staff. They would also answer rather quickly. I also liked that there were many different ways to contact my teachers for help, like through emails, phone calls, texts, or tutoring sessions. For the curriculum, I liked how often we were tested on the material because I feel as though it helped me remember the information better. Senior: I loved the freedom I had to study topics that I cared about or had questions about, not just whatever we were doing at the moment. That flexibility made me really enjoy my classes and feel competent in the skills I was learning. I feel like the amount of structure allowed me to be ready for the level of rigor expected in college, while still cultivating a love of learning. A lot of online schools are so disconnected, but so many of my teachers bridged the gap between students all over the country to unite us in our studies. It's so much more than just a stack of textbooks, it's somewhere that encourages each student to flourish as an individual and grow in both their strengths and weaknesses to all in all become a better student.
