Senior: SAS has both been the best and hardest decision i’ve made in my life. Yes, this school is challenging, with AP and dual enrollment classes. But SAS also gives you an experience you can’t find at ANY other public school, take it from me. When you come out 2 years ahead and have a more well-built resume for work and potential colleges, the hard work is well worth it. Junior: Upon the first few days of school, I was scared of the potential stress and rigor of going to such a school. The name alone, School for Advanced Studies, sounded like a place where the absolute top kids went. However, after the initial intimidation, I found my school to be a place of comfort and support. We are partnered with MDC, and we get 3 hours every morning out of our block schedule to study, walk around the campus, and attend class(es). Having such a large campus and the freedom to be wherever you please helps ease stress. Although our high school classes are all advanced, we have the time and an enormous amount of support from both teachers and staff at our school. We are also exposed to a plethora of opportunities, such as participating in events at MDC. One notable event was just this April, when the actor Tom Hiddleston came to the theater as a guest speaker. Many students even got to personally meet him. Senior: My experience at MAST Academy began in October of 2021 when I entered as a sophmore in highschool. Almost immediately, I noticed a difference in atmosphere, pace, and students as I walked through the halls. The classes were very competitive, which reflected on the students, and everyone was working at a high level in academics. Luckily, it didn't take me long before I merged in with this crowd; I found a friend group, compassionate teachers, and guidance throughout my remaining years. Sophomore: Overall, Iprep is a good school even with a small environment. There is a shortage in high school teachers resulting in teachers taking up multiple subjects, and the problem of not having the typical high school activities and sports. Sophomore: As a current sophomore at DASH who’s transitioning into their Junior year in these next few months, I can say I am grateful for DASH. Teachers really do try to help you here for the most part if you’re struggling, though they also make you understand that you are responsible for yourself. DASH gives us responsibilities that no other high school does in terms of art & design. I can confidently say that the school prepares us for art & design careers and opens so many doors for it; even beyond those careers. The educational experience at the moment is rough as we are going through a transitional period, many teachers have left and with that, there are new ones to fill in their place. The new teachers they get are great, and very kind. So even if the period of transition feels a bit daunting at this moment, what comes after is absolutely worth the wait! Parent: The best part about MAST is the emphasis on high-level work and the availability of dual enrollment classes at FIU, starting in 9th grade. It's a small school - the 2024 graduating class is 93 student. This provides the opportunity to get to know your teachers and really stand out! Students are required to take two science classes and one math class every year. The down sides: Course selection can be limited because it's such a small school. Almost all electives are taken online on Florida Virtual School, during school hours, including PE, foreign language, art requirements, etc, and the school limits what online classes the student can take, even in they're available on FLVS. The school administration has had some turnover this year, and there is no functional guidance counselor this year. Senior: At first I didn’t enjoy coming to the school because it was one gender and I thought I would miss out on the true highschool experience. However coming to this school was the best thing that could have happened to me. Being a small school you are able to truly learn and create friendships for a long term. The worst part of my experience doesn’t have to do with school in itself but I went through a very difficult time in tenth grade and I fear if I wasn’t at this school I wouldn’t have been able to over come it as strongly as I did. Although it’s a small school it allows the teachers to notice each student and who needs help especially when they are struggling mentally. Senior: Starting off with the positive things about MLEC. A school with diverse careers that includes subjects like health, Information technology, engineering, finance, and even automotive is great as it allows students to explore as they discover their passion. MLEC also has countless clubs and activities that are welcome to anyone. From key club that does a great job in interacting with the community outside of school to HOSA or IT that are academy dedicated but also welcome to students in other subject areas that might be interested. Senior: I have been enrolled in COHEA since 2017-2018. Since my enrollment, the general academic setting has grown exponentially. The school has become more focused on college readiness, allowing the student population to take dual enrollment courses as well as AP courses. Additionally, the school uses programs such as Leader in Me to educate students on healthy habits and encourages students to use their voice. There is plenty of student involvement around the school, whether it be mentoring, clubs, or sports. COHEA is a tight knit community in which everyone grows together. The teachers are phenomenal, including different teaching techniques and styles in order to reach everybody. Though I wish that more AP’s were available, there is still quite a diverse selection for those interested.
