I worked for this company for two years. My first year was amazing and vibrant and full of amazing workplace culture. My second year was unfortunately one of the worst years of my life. With a boss that engaged in shady activities and had a reputation to gaslight me and a workplace crew that made me feel unsafe and vulnerable, I quit shortly after being promoted to assistant manager. The location of the second store I worked at during my second year was awful, once I was met by a homeless man sleeping in front of the door when I went in to open for the day. I hold the company dear to my heart, but my experiences there are enough to scar me for a lifetime.
I've been a manager at Spencer's for roughly 4 months, specifically as a Sales Supervisor. While I find some aspects of the job to be rewarding such as working with my team, serving lovely customers, and listening to great music, the job does have some severe drawbacks. There is little opportunity for raises compared to other jobs in the mall-retail business, and the starting pay isn't so great either. The amount of payroll they give us versus the amount of tasks they want us to complete is workable at best, and frustrating at worst. Complaints regarding other employees aren't taken seriously, as I've reported having issues with a manager who is lazy and rude several times, yet nothing has ever happened of it. Lastly, the job training they give you is pitiful. Compared to management training time in other mall-retail stores, we get half of that.
I love my coworkers, but the demand for workers vs supply is awful. Honestly, it's due to the terrible pay for associates (10.50) to start, and the fact that we're in the Mall of America. We're judged by the standards of stores in much smaller malls and shopping centers, meaning we get the same payroll while taking in more traffic. Shoplifting is also a HUGE problem, especially since due to having the same payroll, we have little coverage on many days, even if we're packed. Management is also written up due to high shrink.
