Entry Level Employee: Working with AmeriCorps during COVID has been an interesting experience, as the entire expectation for service has changed. Overall, the position is challenging but fulfilling and provides many important real-world skills such as communication and interpersonal skills. Working directly with communities was my most important factor looking for a job, and AmeriCorps has allowed me to do that while serving the community and working on many different projects. Entry Level Employee: I have worked for TSA almost for 3 years now. I feel like they have a very good retirement and are able to work with you on some things. I am going to college and although the shifts are seniority, I am able to put an accommodation in for my schooling and they are very supportive of it. I also feel like they give you a good amount of paid time off. However, I don’t think it is very easy to move up in this job. The manager chooses who he wants. It doesn’t matter who deserves it. The leadership and Supervisors can be pretty lazy, and like to micromanage. However, they are never disciplined and keep their position until they retire or move on. Overall, I am grateful for this job, however it is very clear that TSA is the bottom of the food chain. We don’t have much opportunity to get raises or move up in positions. I do wish there were more potential for those in the lower grades to have learning opportunities. If you are offered an opportunity it is worth while to take it because it can take you anywhere. Pay is not as competitive to private sectors since there are not as many chances for bonuses but vacation, benefits and other opportunities make it competitive. The USDA is known for hiring veterans, those with all types of disabilities and mental abilities. Entry Level Employee: I worked at IBEX Global for 9 months as a technical support agent. During that time, I made $12 an hour. The hardware provided was better than average but the technology had a few issues. The company was willing to work around my schedule as a college student and I never felt like it was hard to work on my schedule as they were very flexible. Even the breaks were preferable as the break room had many fine features. The only part about this job that was hard was the customers that called in. Out of the calls that I received, about 80% of the calls were stressful and highly unpleasant. There were calls that were a mixture of amusing, enlightening, and very enjoyable but the majority of people who call in to a call center are angry so the support agent has to be able to understand this and not take it personally. Experienced Employee: My overall experience at U.S. Customs and Border Protection is an extreme mix. The culture here is political and your employment status here depends on who you know and whom are their connections with power. You could start at the top, or work your way to the top and have the best of pay, schedule, work, etc., but if you upset the wrong person then it could all be over so fast you would have difficulty figuring out what to do. If you get employed here and those same people like you, then regardless of how much you know or how little you know, you can excel to better positions with better pay. A person without any experience can be placed into a much higher position and never really need to worry about performing the work they have assigned to them, because the actual work could be given to other employees to do.
