This company is caught between two places. It needs to evolve with the times and meet the needs of the modern client, and yet it's struggling to move past its history of being a predictable, paternalistic business, depending on one sales distribution model that it does not own. This is no longer a "mother mutual" company that provides regardless of employee performance, but it is also quite a ways away from being a modern, empowering organization led by thought leaders who have a clear vision of the future and the experience and conviction to execute on it. This has created confusion and frustration amongst employees and reduced speed to deliver. Time will tell if the organization is able to sort through this and come out with a strong, organized, change-able and empowering climate of execution.

This job/internship is very hands on. From the start, I've been making learning how to make sales to clients, creating financial plans and overall building my professional skills. This internship is rated highly year after year for good reason - you are your own boss in a sense and when you put in the effort, you will see the results through sales and lasting relationships with clients. It is hard work but you should prepare for that ahead of time.
Moving from the internship to a full-time rep position seems easy to do. They offer a bonus and help you with the initial change.
People in the office are helpful and ready to set aside their work to be sure that interns and new employees are learning and making sales. They want us to succeed.
The down side of this internship is that it is based on commissions and while you do receive a stipend weekly, until your sales start to come in, those commissions are low/non-existent. Be prepared to work hard from the start.
I have had a great time at Northwestern Mutual. It is a reputable company that lives up to and exceeds the hype around it. It is a company that takes care of both their clients and employees. The culture is pretty laid back and friendly. It is easy to get work done and be friendly with others and socialize at the same time. The flexible hours were the best part in my personal situation. Whenever something came up, I was allowed to leave without any question. We got every holiday off and often the days just prior to holidays. It was nice. Management was very clear with their goals and expectations without pressuring all of us.
