I really enjoy working at Michaels for the most part! So far it has been my favorite job of the three I've had, mainly thanks to my store manager and the other managers on the team as well. I've had some very poor experiences with managers in the past but everyone on my store's team is just incredible. We all work together to get things done and are very open and communicative when something isn't working or coming up with solutions for problems that arise. My only complaint is with upper management limiting hours during busy times of the year like Lowest Prices of the Season sales and expecting us to continue home base operations while simultaneously cutting extra hours used for home base. If we need more people on our team or overtime to complete certain tasks, let us have those things. You can't cut hours and expect more work to be done at the same time. Other than that, between the benefits, the people, and the overall work environment, I have enjoyed my time in this job.
After working at a grocery store I applied to be a cashier here and it is definitely an improvement. The lines only get crazy during the holiday season and even then it is manageable with up to 5 cashiers at the front end. My bosses are very nice and my hours have been extremely flexible. I am a high school senior and they always accommodate my hours so I can still do my school activities. The only bad thing is when customers are unreasonably angry but that's something that happens at every retailer in the world. Also answering the phone at the front end while trying to take care of customers is annoying. Additionally, I have learned how to stock the floor which is easy once you get to know the layout of the store. The added bonus is you get 30% most items as an employee which I take advantage of often, and there is also food in the breakroom for mealtimes. The hours are 4-6 a shift with around 15 hours a week for cashiers which is great!
Applied during seasonal part time 2017 and to say first time working retail, it was crazy busy. At first it was difficult to memorize where everything is at in the store and with seasonal items getting changed but overtime you'll get it. The environment is amazing! I love to help customers with any projects they have, questions about or need help with. Creative juices gets going everytime I come into work. I love to paint so the employees discount is a bonus for me.
