I had a positive experience as an intern. I was given a lot of responsibilities of a typical field engineer, and had many chances to learn and put that knowledge into real applications. I received a lot of support and mentorship from the others on my site and from my bosses. Overall, there are many positive aspects of working at Kiewit, and I hope to return for a full time position. My one warning to future prospective employees, especially students without prior experience in the industry, is that this job makes having a work/life balance more difficult. If this is a priority, boundaries need to be established early on, but the nature of this industry requires longer hours and should be understood before starting. I knew this and was/am okay with the tradeoffs, but this is something I wished I knew the full extend of earlier in my career.
Kiewit is an amazing company from top to bottom. I just finished my internship as a Process Engineer at KOE, Kiewit's Oil, Gas, and Chemical division. The culture here is unprecedented, and the employees are the reason for this. The team based atmosphere found here ensures that all work done exceeds the clients expectations. I have learned more this summer than I have 3 years of Chemical engineering at Texas A&M. Being tasked with engaging activities day to day and working on real world projects has opened my eyes to what life will be like outside of school.
I've been interning for this company for two summers. One of the things I liked about working for Kiewit is their sense of community. I've made so many friends from all over the country thanks to this company. Plus, they have a teaching-centered company. None of the employees ever had a problem with me shadowing them or working with them for several weeks. I usually jumped from one department to another to get a well-rounded learning experience.
