I absolutely love working at Cracker Barrel! I love the culture and the environment. It's my first job and it was so easy to apply to. It was just a one-click application and the manager contacted me to interview. It was quick and easy. My co-workers are respectful and everyone seems to be in a good mood, which I love. I love the positivity and teamwork that is shown daily. One thing, though, I would change would be the commute time. I live on the other side of town and traffic can get busy in Murfreesboro. Other than that, I am very happy to have been working at Cracker Barrel for almost 2 years now.
Cracker barrel is a decent employer -by today's standards- as the chance for tips is a good opportunity to make some money and the work is reasonably demanding when everyone pitches in. My main concern is the front of "guest service" which takes advantage of customers by playing into their innate desire to be shown genuine hospitality as guests to their close companions. We were made for fellowship, not consumerism, not this way. Not to mention, server wage doesn't even approach ethical practice. Then again, who can fault them? This is just good business, these days.
I had a negative experience overall. I worked there for four years in 3 positions and saw some things that were consistently negative. For example, scheduling was always an issue, whether it was being scheduled outside of my written availability, being scheduled on an approved day off, or not being scheduled hardly at all. This wasn't just my own experience, but the one I observed for many of my coworkers as well. Additionally, employees were placed with a lot of blame and the burden of being blamed for almost every negative aspect of the restaurant's performance. Employees became grossly overworked because so many quit due to poor management. Last but certainly not least, my general manager flirted with and inappropriately texted an employee that he clearly also favored during work hours by allowing this employee to choose her own schedule and also promoted this person with no good reason. An associate manager was known to have inappropriate relations with several employees as well.
