Booz Allen Hamilton Reviews
Rating 4.31 out of 5 16 reviews
Booz Allen is a collaborative organization that works to solve (government) client problems. CONS --- Compensation is fair but don't expect bonuses or promotions. They can be difficult to come by. A level was created, "Lead Associate," so that executive management could promote general employees to "management" without sharing any of the usual perks associated with such a promotion and additional responsibilities. It is a promotion in name only. Most work capture is done at the lower levels, but again, the benefits are not shared. Leadership has developed a mentality wherein they believe they are smarter than their clients, without recent or any experience with clients on a day-to-day basis. Should you join them, DO NOT take that mentality to client site. It is destined to fail. PROS --- the firm funds employee development. It delivers skillsets that clients don't have such as IT and cyber. The culture at the mid- to lower-levels is highly collaborative and innovative.
As is the case with all large organizations, your experience is largely manager/team dependent. As a company though, Booz Allen is a great place to be. They genuinely care about work-life balance, have competitive pay and benefits (above industry average 401k match and a $0 premium medical insurance plan), and are pretty flexible in terms of working remotely (I am personally fully remote, other than once a month visits to the office).
Worked for Booz Allen twice; the first time it was a positive experience (circa 2005); recently rejoined it and left after discovering that the company had declined significantly. Mediocre pay by comparison with competitors, ambivalent leadership, and a somewhat creepy "touchy-feely" culture. Corporate rah-rah seeks to reinforce what it may see as a lagging sense of industry self-confidence. A good place for junior staff to begin; note that the "C+ students" who do so are the ones most likely to remain.
