The Baltimore City Health Department was an amazing place to complete an internship. The staff was welcoming, friendly, and attentive. As an intern it’s important to have an atmosphere as such to perform competently.

-Excellent benefits and pay scale...6 years total to get "vested." However, start helping you save for retirement from hire. The still offer Blue Cross Blue Shield Insurance options unlike some other local governments. BCBS is who they use for dental and it is free to the employee unless they would like to opt for a higher plan. If you already have insurance they will give you money for what they don't cover you for. They also give bonuses to employees due to the Union. You must pay union dues. If you donate 1 hour of sick leave then the Union will pay your salary should you run over your FMLA hours.
While there are many great programs at BCHD, administration has a very top-down approach. It's hard to convince leadership that real changes are necessary and need to be made for programming to be more effective and intrinsically valuable for the community. I also struggle with the focus on optics rather than potential good that can come from the work we should be doing. Ultimately, the pay and benefits are fine but I am worried about the actual impact and ethics.
