Shift bidding can be extremely frustrating. Found my ideal shift, then with a rebid I ended up losing this shift and getting thrown onto one that didn't work with my schedule as a full time student. No opportunities to go part time unless you want to wait 9+ months on their waitlist. Honestly felt like everyone was underpaid for the amount of work we did. Sometimes you would get held over for a call, but most of the time you are able to get off on time. Burn out was very common among my coworkers and turn - over rate was high. I would say its a good place to enter the field as an Emergency Medical Technician because you get exposure to many situations and ailments, but I ended up pursuing a job elsewhere after about 6 months where I was paid more in a less stressful and overwhelming environment, as AMR was very understaffed, leading to insane call volumes.
American Medical Response has few positive things about it, working here for approximately 5 years now. Some employees are friendly. Management caters to themselves, does not listen to field crews. You have to bid for shifts, however I have seniority and they block out shifts to bid on, forcing people with seniority onto nights/24 hour undesirable shifts. Then, they bring in strike teams or hire new people and slip them onto the prime shifts people with seniority would have otherside bid on. Management is extremely reactive and not proactive. You have to check your paystubs frequently and will sometimes find you got a pay decrease for no reason and they breach union contracts regularly. Dispatchers have a terrible attitude and will make it their mission to make your life hell on a daily basis. You work 12 hour shifts but will be forced over 2.5 hours plus daily so they can send out transfers and cry that their levels are "too low" to go home.
I was initially hired on as an EMT to do COVID testing at a major hospital near AMR's Seattle HQ. The COVID testing position was temporary, and I was told I would transition to working on the ambulances 6-12 months after I started at the hospital.
The work itself wasn't too difficult and the pay was higher than I would have earned as a traditional EMT.
The main con, that I am very frustrated about, is that instead of 6-12 months at the COVID contract (earning almost twice as much with day shift hours), the contract ended after only 3 months. I am doing some research into the paperwork I signed to see if I have any recourse in terms of pay. I had planned out my finances with this increased pay rate in mind -- I have to go from full to part time when I start nursing school in the fall, and with much less in savings it put a big monkey wrench in my plans.
Also, sick time and PTO don't kick in until after 6 months, so I took unpaid days when I had to attend medical appointments.
