Working at Academy is an interesting learning experience to say the least. Mostly on how not to manage a store. The technology is very old and unacceptable in this modern age, every time I go out; I see cashiers with better registers than us. Ours are from 1999 and break all the time! Break times are very little and sometimes the managers will forget to give you one, and they always encourage you to sell those credit cards to people. Which rarely save you money and mostly cause more problems. Cashiers do a lot more than they should do and most of all; stay very late on closing nights. While the pay is good, the experience can be a little crazy; but it makes for a good reference.
My mangers were very understanding and wonderful to me during my years working throughout college. However, when the pandemic started is when it went downhill for me. They furloughed many people and kept the staff running at bare minimum. They gave us an extra tow dollars a hour that was supposed to last "until the pandemic is over". After only a few months they took away our hazard pay. It is disheartening to get an email from the CEO saying we made record profits over the past few years, when they took away our hazard pay. Corporate comes in to criticize and make changes when they have never worked in the store a day in their life. When people leave the store, they do not promote people within that already have experience, and instead they hire their friends from the outside. Overall, while I enjoyed my experience for the most part while there, they are just another corporate store that doesn't care about their employees. The least they could do is pay more like other retailers.
While working in footwear, I found the pay acceptable in relation to the tasks of the job. I often found that co-workers are the most important aspect of the job. As retail goes, it could be understaffed, which made projects significantly more difficult. The radio was often berated with reminders about convincing customers to sign up for credit cards. The expectations of the higher ups were often very unrealistic. Overall, laid back, but average in terms of enjoyment.
