This is a great area to live during middle age and on. There are great places to live with beautiful views if you have a lot of money. If you are thinking of raising kids here there is so much nature to explore. Crime rates are low, but the city council is filled with curmudgeons who wont even allow a bowling alley to be built. Going to school here is about the same as anywhere else. Progressively throughout the school grades we will have the rich kids getting into trouble with alcohol, and weed was pervasive before legalization. A lot of high school grads will want to get out of Gig Harbor where there is nothing fun to do except play video games at home, and go to Tacoma, where there are many fun things to do and see like arcades, shopping, and the like. The truth is Gig Harbor's boutiques all have a maritime theme and people are tired of it. Old people love it here though. There are 5 old people homes that I can think of, some with specialty care for Alzheimers patients. As far as ecology, a lot of money has been put into restoration from the pollution of the 70's. The sea life has been coming back all over because the water and air are much cleaner. It is spectacular to see.
The shopping area is increasing and broadening in it's consumer market targets, however it usually rests on upper middle class to upper class consumers. Gig Harbor High School has seen the most instances of STD and STI contraction than any other school, there are many prescription drug and illegal drug use circling in the younger generations, and 7 people committed suicide while I attended high school. The community events, however, promote family friendly environments and focus on organic and healthy consumer options. The public transportation is still lacking, though the implementing of the route 101 trolley allows easier commuting in Gig Harbor. I would like to see later times for the Tacoma and Purdy buses or more frequent times. I would also like to see a bus system connecting the outer reaches of Gig Harbor, such as the key peninsula area and the fox island area, to downtown or uptown Gig Harbor. I personally do not like the focus that community has on body image, seen with the increase in tanning and nail salons along with the vitamin and supplement stores and the increase in gyms. Though it is good to have these types of places to promote health, I think teens these days are holding an unhealthy approach to their body image and these establishments promotes a specific look that the teens strive for.
The only real crimes that go on in GH is crimes related to drunk driving/traffic violations and maybe weed. Alcoholism is a problem everywhere and GH is no exception. Washington also happens to have high suicide rates. A few of my high school alum killed themselves. Mental illness I think is a bigger problem in Washington because unhealthy people get released in the streets because the state is bad about funding institutions.
