Moved here 15 yrs ago, after living next town over in Storrs/Mansfield about 25 years. Graduated from UConn, stayed because I liked the semi-rural area. Rarely went to Willimantic, with an image of being overrun with prostitutes, drug dealers and mentally-ill homeless people. Economic circumstances moved me to an apt. in one of the iffier neighborhoods in this "little city." First day, someone steals my license plates. Few days later, going out to walk my dog, street is ringed with yellow tape and several police cars. Officer says a man stabbed his neighbor in the head. Great start! Then I get to know the larger community -- magnet school for the arts, July 4th Boom Box Parade, street festivals, food co-op, niche restaurants, the East Coast Greenway, farmers market, the "Frog Bridge," Garden on the Bridge, huge community garden, yoga center, everything walking distance/or bus, a diverse caring community. And now, a senior/community center under construction. I like it here!
The town of Willimantic has a wide variety of diversity in the community. With also having small shops on our local main street is a great way to explore this small town and what we have to offer. Being able to go to local schools that want to provide for the students rae great as well, Windham/ Willimantic is a tight knit community where everybody knows everyone that can be beneficial.
I am within walking distance to everything I could need: grocery stores, gas stations, urgent cares, gym, etc.. The neighborhood is why I scored this 3 stars. It can be loud and also feel unsafe at times as people come on to my property to dig through trash or come on to my porch.
