In the past decade, the standard of life in West Lafayette has skyrocketed. Purdue is growing rapidly, which has led to an overall boom. The town has seen new roads, bike paths, sidewalks, etc. The schools in the area (West Lafayette Schools and Tippecanoe School Corporation) are both really great options.
In general, the presence of Purdue helps greatly improve things, like the local schools.
As well as the good standard of living, Greater Lafayette is a pretty cheap area to live in.
Another cool plus is diversity. Purdue attracts a huge international community, which leads to diversity in the population as well as a variety of interesting dining and recreation options. Also, Purdue refuses to give the International Students who attend any scholarships (merit or need-based) and charges them a huge tuition for their education, which results in a lot of rich foreigners who actively put in hundreds of thousands of dollars into the local economy.

I attend Purdue University, which is in West Lafayette, and to be completely honest, West Lafayette is the best I've seen of Indiana. The area and campus is one of the safest in the U.S., there is a lot of diversity, and the people are really nice! Food scene is amazing, too. Would definitely recommend visiting!
I love West Lafayette and all that it has to offer with Purdue University being right there but there are still some things that I believe could make this an even better town. The construction is horrible, especially on campus right now. Once they get that finished up, it will be a beautiful campus again and I can't wait!
