The strongest pros for this place after my 11 years spent here are fairly low crime, low traffic, cultural variety. It's so easy to get around to all amenities, and schools are great. Purdue provides main entertainment as local art and music is of quite low profile.
For us, foreigners, it's an easy place to live as Purdue is very popular with foreign students and teachers. To me, all the pros end here. The level of sports and arts is very limited if you wish your children advance in those.
For any serious hobby you might have, Indianapolis is a closest place to go (at least 1 hr drive), with Chicago being next, and that's already 2.5 hr stressful drive on average. The town worked hard on improvement of trails for biking/walking, mostly not protected from strong sun or wind. The town is not really walkable. Small businesses do not thrive here. Boring flat terrains with mostly agricultural lands around. The closest decent parks/lakes are also at least 1.5 hr drive.
Review West Lafayette
I like the people of West Lafayette. Most people here are very polite and friendly. It's not a big city, so the crime rate is pretty low. Although some people think it's too small and boring, there are plenty of good bars and restaurants to enjoy on the weekends. West Lafayette is very clean and well-kept. Parking can be a problem, because there is a bit of an over-crowding problem, so I usually walk to any place on campus. Overall, I would recommend it to any student who is okay with a small town lifestyle.
Purdue tends to drive the economy here. A lot of science and technology firms in the area, and a number of great schools. Crime has slowly been growing over the years, but still a fairly safe place to live, especially considering the population density. Housing market continues to climb, and a lot of houses are priced well beyond what they would be worth even 10-15 minutes outside of W. Lafayette. Thankfully, commute times are short which makes residing outside of town very feasible.
