I have lived in Waunakee for 11 years and there has been a drastic improvement in the downtown area from 11 years ago. I have loved seeing the transformation from an out-of-date town to a modern, homey town. There are tons of cute, local shops on Main Street from decor to candle shops to clothing boutiques. The school district is excellent and exceed in athletics as well as providing a safe environment to learn in. Waunakee is a safe community that is friendly and welcoming!
I like how Waunakee is still considered a village and it doesn't allow big stores be built here, such as Target. I also love how there are so many community events and activities to bring us all together. Another big thing that makes Waunakee so great is the school district. The teachers here push us with our schoolwork and have us be prepared for college. They also push us to try and do our best in athletics. One thing that I wish Waunakee changed was the amount of food options. We have around two cafes, and they both close around 3, while I am still in school. Otheriwise we have a few fast food and pizza options. I'd like to see more sit down and unique food places.
It is a nice town but it is expanding very rapidly which is losing its roots which is “farming.” Along with that the schools are not diverse, it’s mainly just white/ Caucasian individuals. If a person is looking for a good school for education this is the place. If a person is looking for a good athletic program this is the place. If someone is looking for an affordable place to live this is not the place. Taxes are incredibly high in this area. It’s a nice town it just has it’s downfalls like any other.
