Vincennes is a city with a very prominent presence of nature. There are many parks, ponds, lakes, wooded areas, and a river with much diverse wildlife. Vincennes also has numerous restaurant and shopping options for a day out on the town. Vincennes is the first city of Indiana and as a result has much rich history and a scenic, historic downtown. Being located in rural Indiana citizens also have regular access and view to the sprawling countryside of the state. Being a university town, there is much opportunity for the community in terms of schooling, employment, and community events. Despite these good things, I still found many parts of residential streets to be lacking in terms of cleanliness and functional roads and sidewalks.
Vincennes doesn't get the care it deserves for being Indiana's first city. Most everything is run down, historic homes & buildings. There is no sense of community, justice, culture, diversity, or really much of anything. The police force will be after you if you are a black minority coming here for the University. The graduation rate is below 30%. There is no growth or opportunity in this community. Very backwards, I would not raise a family here.
I enjoy living in Vincennes Indiana and getting to see it's community grow. I am very active in many organizations that contribute to Vincennes; I love getting to see my work making a difference. Our town definitely has a small town feel! I love this because when you go somewhere you always see a familiar face!
