Being a young family, there really isn't anything making us want to stay. Almost all young families end up moving to Clinton or Jackson area. I don't feel safe going out at night by myself, even to Walmart. We love our church and there are some cool things around the city (museums, local attractions and restaurants), but, honestly, you have to travel 45 mins to Jackson to really do anything. Not much for families to do. Tthe crime is only growing. Job at ERDC's the only reason we're still here. There are some new politicians in place are that enacting change slowly, but I don't know that things will really change anytime soon. Education is terrible, and our poor teachers are so under-funded and overworked. The people are pretty friendly. I'd say it's a retirement community that's about 30 years behind. Also, large chains (Olive Garden, Applebees, etc) are not allowed within the city limits. But definitely some great local restaurants!!

Vicksburg has many good parks and areas for the children. The Splash pad on Catfish Row down by the river is excellent place for the kids to play in the hot Mississippi summer, once they get done there right across the way is a great playground area. Across the street from the Splash pad is the river wall mural. Much to do in downtown. Construction has started on a new water park for the family. For the older people there is much to do downtown in the afternoon hours; clubs, bars, and more, all within walking distance on historic Washington Street. A little bit for everyone.
Vicksburg is a wonderful city with many things to do for those who love adventure. Bricks and Spokes is a great event which features bicycle rides across the Mississippi River bridge and through the historic downtown Vicksburg. BluzCruz Canoe and Kayak Race is a 22 mile adventure down the Mississippi River ending at the Vicksburg River Front and the Run through History is a great 10k through the Military Park. Many local walk and jog through the Military park daily. Downtown is going through tremendous development for retail, living and dining experiences. Come see our city and you will enjoy the many opportunities that are available.
