I like Sylva because it is a small town. Shopping, reaturants, schools and many other things conviently located. With a University just outside of town and a national ranked community college in the city limits, traffic is congested a lot of the time. More clothing stores would be ideal for this area, there is only one so everyone has to go out of town to shop. Most people don't have the time to spend a whole day shopping for clothing in the next towns over, 20-45 miles away. With the college being nearby, outlet stores would bring revenue to the area. Other than the shopping issue, we could also use more choices of restaurants, fast food and sit down dinning. I like the area and being able to go to work, school, the gym within a few minutes drive. Convenience is exactly what you get here.
Since I have lived in my area my whole life it is not an easy task to compare it to other places. I enjoy how there are many hiking areas and really anything one could want to do outdoors is available. New microbrews are opening up everywhere and bringing really relaxed and fun loving people here. I would really like to see improvement in our public education since our state is one of the worst in the nation for education.
I have no qualms about walking around at night in town. Every once in awhile there will be reports of women being assaulted during a solo hike but that is some of the worst crime around that we hear about.
