I loved all the tourist attractions (ice cream shops, clothing stores, etc.) and most people carry Southern Hospitality everywhere! Of course the beach is amazing as well. Overall, quite a lovely place to vacation/visit. I lived there for about seven years and would rate Surf City with the highest honors!

Family friendly with a nice public park with boat access and fishing pier. Taxes reasonable and affordable real estate. Town government keeps people informed about weather and public safety issues. Some decent restaurants and shops. Mostly quiet in offseason but opportunities for residents of all ages to participate in recreation and special events. Campus of community college just off island.
Surf City is a small cute beach town to live in. Once summer hits tourists start rolling in to enjoy the clean water and clean beach with free parking. The beach has multiple access. The next town over North Topsail isn't as crowded and has free parking as well. Surf City is a town that has an abundant amount of seafood and produces markets. The best part about this town is it's convenient. It's in the middle of Jacksonville and Wilmington where major shopping stores are located.
