Lived here and husband went through the school district. Let's just say there is a reason that Oregon is such a big rival.
1. Food-I have learned that native Stoughtonites think that their food is amazing when in reality it is just average or even below. Good example would be their beloved Mexican restaurant, El Rio. Poor quality food but they all think it is great.
2. School district is okay. Didn't teach my husband math very well but luckily they have ditched the program so it is improving. The opportunities are good though!
3. Busy-It is a fast growing and affordable town to live in so there is a lot of appeal in that. This also means that a lot of people live here so the small-town feel gets kind of lost.
4. Businesses-Lots of different businesses both local and chains. Local businesses sometimes get missed by people traveling through since they are mostly downtown and parking is not as accessible. Also their hours are not great which doesn't help compete with the chains.

Stoughton is a nice, smaller town just outside of Madison. Personally, I love the location. Stoughton is about 30 minutes away from Madison and no more than 1 hour and 30 minutes away from Milwaukee. Stoughton has a high population of older people and sometimes that demographic seems to limit the activities available for young people. I would say it is the typical smaller midwest city.
Personally, the town is too small. I feel as though you can't do anything without the entire town knowing about it. The school district is even worse they don't prepare kids for college at all, the only thing they care about is graduation rates which essentially makes it impossible for kids to fail high school.
