Standish is great because it is only about 30 minutes from Portland and South Portland so that is generally the furthest you will have to travel to get anything you need. There is a large grocery store, Hannaford with a Pharmacy and two large banks located in town. In addition, there are a couple restaurants and one of those discount "dollar" type stores. All of the above mentioned are in the area considered town center and if you can't find what you need there, it is only about 10 minutes to the next town to the east, Gorham or north, Windham where you will find more options. Standish has three elementary schools and a high school. The middle school is next door to the high school, but technically in Buxton.
Standish is where I'm from. It is where I played sports, danced tap and jazz, and graduated high school. It is near and dear to the Saco River and Sebago Lake I grew up. I still have a favorite trail I like to hike near my house. I would sit and wait along the rocks of the Saco River. Pure serenity. There are some restaurants, gas stations, churches, grocery stores. I would say it is perfect for any type of family starting out. It also very safe and beautiful naturalistic views.
I moved to standish around first grade. I made friends right away and it is an extremely friendly town. Its one of those places where nothing bad happens, and nothing exciting really happens either however it is very safe on top of being very quiet.
