a great little town that I have come to like. the winters are severe, so I try and not visit then, but all other 3 seasons are great. The beach is fun. There are a few good spots for food. One or two nice fine dining spots. Great fishing/boating on one of the largest fresh water bodies. Comparatively cheap to most of the country, and 4 of the top 25 colleges within 100 miles or so. I think this is probably one of the best spots in the Midwest to raise a family. Drawbacks are a lack of anything for 21+ night life, it is a small town that is between four of the top 25 worst places in the US (Benton harbor, south bend, Chicago and Detroit). It’s a 6 month per year town if you can afford another place in Florida, which many people can considering homes here are cheap. Seems people kind of hibernate in winter and that just doesn’t seem fun or healthy . Also, the job situation seems to be built entirely off one corporation- Whirlpool. Needs more major Corp to move in.
I loved the area I grew up in. It was a very safe place. Located right on Lake Michigan there is plenty to do in the summer. There are plenty of outdoor activities to do. However, I wish there was less tourism in the summer which makes going downtown a pain.
Saint Joseph is a bit of a tourist town. We are directly on Lake Michigan, which is a sight to see for all! We have lots of events, through out the entire year. We hold a farmer's market spring to fall, we have festivals, antiques on the bluff, and plenty of places to eat and shop. There are quite a few rental summer homes within walking distance to the water front. Sunsets never dissapoint! We are home to Michigan's great Southwest! We have an art's district as well. Krasl holds an annual weekend art show every summer. Vendors and artists alike are welcome!
Pretty nice place to live and the schools are decent. Sometimes it can be boring, but certain places are full of activities.
There isn't crime very often in this area. Police can be seen patrolling the streets occasionally.
I have been living in St. Joseph for eighteen years. Never have I ever felt unsafe while here. I constantly see the police driving around everywhere, so I have no concerns.
Options can feel very limited in this small town. To hang out with friends in this town the only options are going to downton St. Joe, the beach, and Kelley's Bowling Alley. If you want to watch a movie, you have to go to Benton Harbor. If you want to actually shop at a mall, you have to go to South Bend or Kalamazoo. Although these can be set backs, no place can really compare to the atmosphere of St. Joseph. Everything is so relaxed and laid back here. St. Joseph is the definition of "home" to me.
This area is full of adventure! From the gorgeous lakes, hiking the dunes, wild life, and water activities, you can't beat the scenery! Hometown wineries and brew pubs add a touch of flare to the small community I live in.
