South City is a safe, convenient and relatively affordable place to live. On a social level, however, it doesn't feel like a tight knit community. The diversity is great (yum), but it seems people don't interact much unless there's a free city event. The different neighborhoods - east of 101 biotech, downtown, Westborough, etc. - don't feel like part of the same city. There's a tug of war between progressives, who want high-density affordable housing, higher business taxes and so forth, and more moderate folks who came here precisely to escape San Francisco style policies. At the moment, the progressives are winning and older residents are cashing out. Their houses are then rented or flipped multiple times, giving a transient/commuter town feel that didn't exist in years past. All in all, it's a city in flux. That could be a pro or a con depending on your willingness to get involved in local politics, your personality, and stage in life.
Pros: clean, barely any homeless people, and it is safe for the most part. The only major crime that has been occurring more frequently are care thefts and break ins, but this is occurring throughout the Bay Area. It is family friendly. The municipal building has many activities and classes for everyone. Commuting is easy.
Cons: there is no nightlife. It is becoming more expensive, as it is everywhere.

Easy access to a bunch of amazing activities and sites without all the people and lack of parking that comes with living in SF. Not as glamorous as some SF areas, but still nice homes and neighborhoods with all sorts of diversity and acceptance. Plenty of places to go hike, ride bikes, driving distance to Santa Cruz and Monterey, access to easy public transport. Safe and plenty of nightlife and places to eat are within 30 mins.
