South Portland is a pretty chill place. I've spent a few years at South Portland public schools, yet I didn't like them. Personally I needed something more challenging so I transferred to some private schools in Portland. Nothing really happens in Sopo either. If you want job opportunities or an eventful nightlife Portland's much better. On the other hand though that's what makes Sopo a safer and more family friendly place. The commute from Sopo and Portland isn't long at all so that's nice too.
South Portland is a great place to live—or to visit for a more laid back vacation. There are tons of hidden spots to find (mostly near the beach) and a bunch of cute little cafes and shops, especially in Nightville. There’s an excellent Thai place next to an Italian restaurant and perhaps the cutest little local shop ever: Rosemont, which sits across from the Cookie Jar and is up the road from new coffee shop Omi’s. SOPO is also full of light houses and beautiful ocean views. Just walking through the streets to see the different kinds of houses and landscapes is a treat itself. And when you’re done, you can head on over to Scoop’s or Red’s to get a bowl of ice cream and argue over whether hard serve or soft serve is better. (Hint, Hint, it’s Hard serve.)
I love my hometown, South Portland, Maine! I live right on the water, so that's hard to beat. I guess if I wanted anything to change it would be the amount of funding that goes into schools, there just isn't enough of it! In recent years the high school finally got an update, but there are still a lot of things that need to be done.
