I have lived and attended school in this small town for all 17 years of my life. One thing I love most about South Orange is the diversity among residents/visitors that make up our community. We host many kinds of social events that are meant to welcome all walks of life to find their place here and become comfortable and familiar with the people and environment. I must say, it's been getting harder to afford living here since the tax has skyrocketed. Many residents are commuters that take the train to NY and that's a beneficial accommodation since we're in close proximity to the city. We have taken steps to promoting recycling/greener methods as well as healthier eating options such as weekly farmer's markets. Nightlife usually consists of high school/college students hanging out late looking for something to eat. Saturday Nights are busy! Regardless of bordering high-crime neighborhoods, South Orange is mostly safe. It's truly a great place to live, work, and raise a family.
Lots of diversity, very LGBT friendly, however the K-12 school system needs a lot of work. The homes are beautiful and available at all price points, and there are many local events. The nearby reservation is a great source of nature. The town is a little bare right now, but hopefully some great stores will come in soon. There is a fantastic coffee shop uptown, and downtown has some nice restaurants.
I like how close to NYC the town is. The commute whether by car or train is quick. It's safe by and large. My only complaints: the town is boring. Not much to do here. The restaurants are few and of average quality. People talk about diversity: It's predominantly black and white with very little every thing else in between. Oh and I might add that although you have successful black families here amidst affluent white families...the few rarely mix.
