Small town vibes in the big city! Has everything you could want, within a couple miles. New access to public transport makes it easy to get into Boston, and most of the area is very walkable. Diverse, community oriented, and beautiful! Has gentrified over the years, and is supposed to be getting new high roses. Wonder how is will effect the community.
Somerville has drastically changed over the past few decades. Until the 90s, Somerville was the town your parents told you to avoid. Its nickname was Slumerville. However in the past 20 years it has become tight knit but diverse community. All of the "dirtiness" associated with the town has disappeared, with many community projects bringing livelihood to the community. The towns governing body has also prioritized the safety and wellbeing of all its residents in terms of public works (building parks, improving school systems, expanding commuter rail lines, building affordable housing complexes etc). Somerville has gone from a slum to being one of the best places to live in the state.
I have lived in Somerville for the past 10 years. I moved here in 2013 when I was 27 and am currently 37. This city is perfect if you are in your mid to late twenties/early 30's. You would definitely want to rent with roommates if possible.
There is very little crime, prices for housing are going up, and the job market is great. There are some iffy areas, but in the 10 years living here, I honestly have never felt unsafe.
