If you like gossip and everyone up in your business, this is the place. The description says that this is a conservative leaning town. That could not be further from the truth. I have lived in small towns before and never have experienced the gossip and BS politics more than I have in this town. We are also getting lots of spillover of transients from Salem. It’s going downhill quick. There are some good people in this town. But less good then bad. Can’t wait to move.
Silverton is a very mixed basket. Being a so-called 'blue' state we have a lot of very liberal ideas floating around and in our government - we've legalized pot, gay rights are fought for, etc. - and that is incredible. However all this does not overshadow the fact that Silverton and many other small towns are the traditional idea of rural conservative communities as well. On the surface our town in fairly liberal and kind, but when you dive deeper you run into the large amounts of bigoted individuals that make up our town. People who oppose gay rights, sex, and love their guns, who encourage people to bring guns to the School Walkout this year and where a petition attempted to bring down the High School Gay Straight Alliance. There are a lot of lovely people here, and the environment is alright, you simply have to be very careful if you're not white and conservative.
