Overall, Columbia is a decent place to live. It is located within an hour to two and half of tourist cities such as Myrtle Beach, Charleston and Charlotte. The city has many things to offer such as Lake Murray, the Riverbanks Zoo and the State House. The community is diverse and has a variety of cultural events and restaurants. I currently attend the University of South Carolina and have thoroughly enjoyed my experience thus far. I moved to Columbia from Myrtle Beach, SC and find myself missing the beach. My dream is to move to Seattle, Washington because I prefer bigger cities.
Only complaints are that everything is spaced out just far enough so that you can't walk/bike everywhere, and that quality of living isn't consistent across the area--there are very poor places, average places, and very rich places.
Overall, Columbia is a relatively safe city. There are some areas of town that should be avoided but for the most part safety is not an issue. Police are responsive and are always nearby.
