Current Resident: Four stars for sense of community. I feel like everyone always looks out for each other. I've lived here my whole life. I think outsiders may have a prejudgement of it from the outside looking in, but its full of diversity and great food, and hardworking people that never give up. But it has potential to be greater. It needs people that care, not just people that accept it one way and don't want it to improve. Safety has definitely gone down. It needs affordable living with good job opportunities and opportunities to get the community involved on its improvements not large corporations that want to gentrify and build high rises. Also the 25 year work on the van wyck has to cease. The van wyck expressway especially near exit 4 has been under construction for my entire existence and it has not really improved. Would love to see a formal plan and breakdown of what exactly the long term goals are for the expressways to understand why there is so much traffic at all times.... Read 171 reviews

Niche User: I feel fortunate to have grown up in the area that I did. As I get older, I realize that my hometown is diverse and unique. There are areas that are busier, like the city of Poughkeepsie with shops, clubs and restaurants. However, we also are also have areas with farms, hiking trails, and waterways. We are close enough to New York City, or the Adirondacks for a day trip. There really is something for everyone. If I had to go back and choose, I would love to grow up here all over again.... Current Resident: I like that Hollis has two nearby busy avenues which provides access to grocery stores, delicatessens, farmer's markets, fast food, public transportation, liquor stores, doctor's offices, and dollar stores. There have been an increasing amount of crime, however, which may facilitate feelings of fear. There should be an increase of public safety. In the last few years, there have been good changes such as traffic safety, including increasing traffic lights and stop signs, and an increase of greenery. Many businesses have been opening that offer the neighborhood more culturally diverse foods and different kinds of health care. Current Resident: Middletown has been a delightful place to grow up in. I always felt self in my neighborhood and was unafraid to walk or bike to stores a few miles away. The town has both a country and city-like atmosphere with an abundance of both buildings and open or forested land. However, the town is becoming more urban by the year. It's hour distance from New York City makes it home to many commuters, and property tends to be expensive. Middletown high school is uncomfortably large and crowded. Though there's tight restrictions, there's a multitude of unique and fun learning opportunities for students. Lifeguarding is a popular, highly demanded summer job. As a lifeguard, I have the convenience of working at a pool in my own neighborhood. I also admire Middletown for it's incredible diversity. Minority groups make up the majority of the population.... Current Resident: I love living here in St. George . Like most downtowns areas it is especially special because the rest of Staten Island is more desolate and suburban . Here I have the best of busy city vibes mixed with beautiful nature and hills and a beautiful view of Manhattan's skyline . The neighborhood is more close knit than those of the over crowded Brooklyn or queens . Current Resident: I love the neighborhood. It is very quiet and pleasant. The police patrol the neighborhood alot. I feel safe living in my neighborhood. The problem I have the supermarkets are far from my house and you need to drive. I am working on getting my driver's license. That is my goal so I can get to the stores and go places within the borough. I really do not like the shunck smell sometimes. When I wake up in the morning at times. I can smell the nasty smell. Current Resident: Valley Stream is a beautiful neighborhood to live in. There are so many activities to do and clubs to partake in. It's a safe and quiet place for families to reside and criminal activity is kept to a minimum. One perk that stands out for this neighborhood is Hendrickson Park which is a beautiful park that contains bike/walking lanes, benches, basketball and tennis courts, a pool, and so much more. Current Resident: I’ve lived here around 20 years and I have to say it will always be one of my favorite places. Lovely family friendly feeling with a lot to do all of the time while still maintaining a small and communal feeling. It has extremely good access to almost all subway lines and has a ton of amazing restaurants and cafes. The streets are beautiful and despite what some other reviews say I would say it’s extremely safe, especially now. Obviously it’s still NYC but in comparison to the majority of other NYC neighborhoods I would consider it to be equally if not more safe than most Manhattan and Downtown Brooklyn areas. All in all, super convenient, charming, pretty and overall a lovely place to live. Probably the only major downside are the high prices but it’s NYC so you can’t really expect anything different.
