Current Resident: Four stars for sense of community. I feel like everyone always looks out for each other. I've lived here my whole life. I think outsiders may have a prejudgement of it from the outside looking in, but its full of diversity and great food, and hardworking people that never give up. But it has potential to be greater. It needs people that care, not just people that accept it one way and don't want it to improve. Safety has definitely gone down. It needs affordable living with good job opportunities and opportunities to get the community involved on its improvements not large corporations that want to gentrify and build high rises. Also the 25 year work on the van wyck has to cease. The van wyck expressway especially near exit 4 has been under construction for my entire existence and it has not really improved. Would love to see a formal plan and breakdown of what exactly the long term goals are for the expressways to understand why there is so much traffic at all times.... Read 171 reviews

Current Resident: I like that Hollis has two nearby busy avenues which provides access to grocery stores, delicatessens, farmer's markets, fast food, public transportation, liquor stores, doctor's offices, and dollar stores. There have been an increasing amount of crime, however, which may facilitate feelings of fear. There should be an increase of public safety. In the last few years, there have been good changes such as traffic safety, including increasing traffic lights and stop signs, and an increase of greenery. Many businesses have been opening that offer the neighborhood more culturally diverse foods and different kinds of health care. Current Resident: I love living here in St. George . Like most downtowns areas it is especially special because the rest of Staten Island is more desolate and suburban . Here I have the best of busy city vibes mixed with beautiful nature and hills and a beautiful view of Manhattan's skyline . The neighborhood is more close knit than those of the over crowded Brooklyn or queens . Current Resident: I love the neighborhood. It is very quiet and pleasant. The police patrol the neighborhood alot. I feel safe living in my neighborhood. The problem I have the supermarkets are far from my house and you need to drive. I am working on getting my driver's license. That is my goal so I can get to the stores and go places within the borough. I really do not like the shunck smell sometimes. When I wake up in the morning at times. I can smell the nasty smell. Current Resident: I’ve lived here around 20 years and I have to say it will always be one of my favorite places. Lovely family friendly feeling with a lot to do all of the time while still maintaining a small and communal feeling. It has extremely good access to almost all subway lines and has a ton of amazing restaurants and cafes. The streets are beautiful and despite what some other reviews say I would say it’s extremely safe, especially now. Obviously it’s still NYC but in comparison to the majority of other NYC neighborhoods I would consider it to be equally if not more safe than most Manhattan and Downtown Brooklyn areas. All in all, super convenient, charming, pretty and overall a lovely place to live. Probably the only major downside are the high prices but it’s NYC so you can’t really expect anything different. Current Resident: If Jersey City has earned the title of most diverse city in America, then Journal Square is its crown jewel. The area is a mix of some historic charm, new high rises and development, and a lot in between. Although green space is lacking, there are a few pockets in or nearby such as Canco Park, Leonard Gordon Park, and Pershing Field. The access to NYC is amazing: you can reach downtown NYC in about 10 mins, and midtown in about 20 mins. Current Resident: A diverse group of people from all over the world. It's quiet, but there's just enough noise to remind you that you are still in New York City. Lots of buses serve this area and they are a 15-minute ride from the ferry. If you want to cross the Verrazzano Bridge with a car, it should take you around 5 minutes to get to the bridge entrance. Silver Lake Park is very beautiful and has a rich history. It is very accessible since it sits right in the middle of the neighborhood. Long paths and tall slopes and a pretty lake make it the perfect place for a weekend bike ride. Houses range in size and property area but they are nicest around the corner of Oxford Place and Victory Blvd. Every now and again you get an exception. Former Resident: Family oriented place to live with parks, landmarks, greenery, great food and close proximity to other Queens cities. Jamaica Queens is a very diverse city with a huge Caribbean population. Jamaica avenue is place to be if your looking to shop for a few things, grab a bite to eat or catch a movie. It's also where you would catch any bus to neighboring cities. The area trains will get you to Manhattan in about 30 minutes and to jfk airport in even less time. The long island rail road could get you to green acres mall in about 7 minutes and don't hesitate to try a "dollar" cab or van while your at it. Although they're called dollar rides they're actually $3. Blame it on inflation. York college is within short walking distance from Jamaica avenue. If your into thrifting you should visit Unique for a cool collection of vintage and pre owned items... The store is huge! If your driving be careful of rush hour traffic.
