Current Resident: Irmo is a pretty small community, so most people are close. There are many amazing small, family owned businesses located here. Everyone seems to know each other so when people need help, others step up. There’s also lots of great food options to chose from! Parent: Commonwealth Academy is above and beyond what anyone could possibly imagine for their child. We needed to find a small, specialized school so that our daughter could thrive and succeed. It was a thrill to find such an inclusive atmosphere filled with dedicated administrators and teachers. My daughter has an anxiety disorder and OCD. Every single teacher CARES. The combination of education, creativity and fun that they have created is unmatched. The classrooms are small and kids with every learning difference are treated with respect and patience. Without the chaos and fear of a big school, our daughter got past the nerves that held her back and learned to speak to adults and advocate for herself. She had warm and nurturing advisors who saw her potential and appreciated her strengths - they gave her CONFIDENCE. The education and unparalleled college prep she received from C/A is why she's thriving in college today, and why our younger daughter is now a C/A student.... Read 11 reviews

Current Resident: I moved here from San Diego, California, and I enjoy living here. The people are very friendly, and I have the best neighbors ever! I moved here as a single mom, and I feel very safe. My advice to anyone moving here is to embrace the culture of a small town. Enjoy the local farmer’s markets, and local cute little cottage style restaurants, and you will enjoy it. If you want a Sprouts, go to Carrot 14. If you want to go to Costco, you will need to drive 20 minutes to Irmo. The traffic is a little crowded at times, but they are also growing rapidly. I think the entire area is dealing with rapid growth. I’m glad I moved here when I did.... Read 135 reviews

Current Resident: Blythewood is a small town but has some excellent local options for food and fun. It is a great place to live because the people are friendly. It has grown a lot in the last 20 years but there is still a small town feel to it. There are some great options for schools both public and private. We are just far enough away from the big city of Columbia. It is convenient however to all the down town stuff to do such as art exhibits, baseball, the state fair and a wonderful zoo! City in South Carolina
Current Resident: Columbia is a wonderful city with lots of things to do! With the close downtown area as well as being close to the campus of one of the largest universities in the south, there are lots of different things to see and do. On Saturdays, they shut down the main street and do a farmer's market, so it is really fun to go there with friends and family! The city has lots of different nightlife opportunities from the Vista to Five Points. The City has lots of different festivals and there is always something going on. Town in South Carolina
Current Resident: Camden is rich in its history and offers small town, country living with all the amenities of the big city. We live in the historic district with established, natural landscaping, huge oaks and dense foliage. We often see an abundance of wildlife in our yard, nibbling on the fruit trees. Deer and red tail fox are commonplace. It is very quiet here and our neighbors are super friendly. It's a step back in time, a much better time. If relying on statistics, know how to interpret them. Per capita is keyword. The crime rate as compared to the national or state average, is not comparable. Camden is a VERY safe place to live.... Read 60 reviews

Current Resident: Lugoff is a small town located between Columbia and Camden in South Carolina. I love living in Lugoff and attending Lugoff Elgin High School. I have had some of the best hands on opportunities through my high school in the area of Early Childhood Education which is what I want to do when I graduate from college! I feel like it's small enough so that you know lots of folks and its easy to run into someone you know everywhere you go. Folks here are friendly and welcoming so whether you've been here your entire life or are new to this town, you will be welcomed with open arms! One thing I really love here is the small town feel with easy access to the country or the city. We are only about 20 minutes from Columbia, an hour or so from Charlotte, NC and the best part is that the beach and the mountains are only about a two hour drive away. There is plenty of access to fun things within a short amount of time if you are looking for something to do! Lugoff really is a great place to live!... Read 35 reviews

Current Resident: Retired couple from Upstate NY, we moved Gaston as Kiplingers chose Columbia SC as top 9 cities to retire to. We live on Pine Plain Rd. It’s a quiet, rural area. Many new large homes going up. Most tracts of land are 3+ acres so neighbors are there but you can’t see them. I’m fine with that. Taxes are insanely low. New house on 3 acres $1,100.00 yr. No crime, the neighborhood is friendly, I wave they wave back. Grocery stores, banks, fuel and highways are about 5 mins away. Shopping malls, Medical hubs, Universities, Entertainment, Home improvement stores, and restaurants are 25-30 mins away. I’m fine with that as a trade off to insanely low taxes, no crime and can’t see your neighbors privacy. Not a good location for top schools. But perfect for established couples. No broad band yet (I’m about 1/2 mile away from connection) but there is 4G Internet. New houses being built, I see this area blowing up soon. Good luck.... Read 14 reviews

Parent: We switched to Sheridan during the pandemic joining a small community that focused on the safety of our children while limiting the disruption to their education. The administration did a stellar job. What truly stands out is how well rounded a Sheridan education is. In addition to the more traditional academics, its arts and music instruction as well as its focus on diverse communities through the student clubs is truly exceptional. We chose a K-8 school because of the added focus on the middle school years which can be difficult transition years. As the school skews young the older kids don’t grow up too fast. This is a gentle school. Middle school students mentor the lower school students. My son loves his mentor and he looks forward to becoming a mentor to a lower school student himself. Finally, Sheridan is a school that builds confidence. In 7th grade, students lead their own high school selection under the guidance of their teachers. This is incredibly empowering!...
