Neighborhood in Berkeley, CA
Nearby Resident: It's definitely a cultural niche! People from all walks of life come here to attend school, eat good food, or just hang out. There are many thriving small businesses and lots of amazing food. It's pretty touristy, but also not too friendly to the typical resident: housing is expensive and homelessness is sadly a major problem.... Read 4 reviews

Current Resident: I've lived in Central Berkeley for 34 years, raising two children through the public schools. Both achieved degrees from top schools, nationally. I love being able to walk to all the best amenities a diverse city has to offer: theatre, restaurants, movies, libraries, parks, public transport, city offices, and yes, my local Y and a Trader Joe's! What's not to love?... Read 13 reviews

Current Resident: A community still influenced by how it was physically formed, as a pioneering modern housing development of very similar homes, establishing a sense of equality that persists. Very focused on the close community, with a proud local nickname being Walkable Westbrae. Not overly active in cIty-politics but will rise to the occasion locally, e.g. organizing to improve a dangerous. intersection. to eliminate crashes. Very food oriented, proud of living near the region's best produce store.. Satisfied that big retail stores are not permitted here, and very koyal to inventive small retail shops (but not luxury establishments)..Many residents attacched to the nearby University for education or employment, a source of our diversity.. Generally satisatisfied with our degree of diversity in income levels and race,, responds liberally to specific locally focused issues. One of the most moderate climates in the country, both winter and summer -- summer high usually around 70, winter low 38.... Read 16 reviews

Current Resident: I feel lucky to live in this neighborhood. Lots of walkable food, stores, entertainment and parks. There is crime, especially in package stealing and car related things, but overall I feel pretty safe. The weather is great, the architecture is beautiful and the people are nice. It feels like a homey community and you can easily reach the rest of the city in decent time. Great freeway access and with the new slow streets, less crazy traffic. Feels pretty clean and is very livable. You do get some stray negative elements coming through, but overall I love it. If I were lower income, though, I'd be priced out or pay a lot for a pretty small place.... Read 11 reviews
