Town in California
Current Resident: It feels like America in the 70’s with everything you need and little that you don’t. The culture is less one of consumption, and more of quality of life. Nature and community play a big part in this enlightened town. It is a safe place to exist, both physically and spiritually. Just strolling around on the streets one finds live music, people dancing - yes dancing; from the homeless guy on a wheel chair, to children, trendy young adults, hippies, couples in their golden years, and even the occasional weirdo, straight out of a Cohen brothers movie. I am surprised everyday with the good food and the charm!... Read 184 reviews

Current Resident: It's a nice small town next to the beach. I love that stores are close by and there are eco-friendly options in most places. It is bicycle and pedestrian-friendly. There are a few parks nearby and many trails to hike. Many of the parks allow dogs and some trails allow horses. There is a local library next to one of the parks. The landscaping is nice with flowers mulch instead of water-consuming lawns. I would love to see more community and environmentally-consciousness to the area with farmer's markets or composting sites. If you own reptiles or other exotic pets, it may be difficult to find a good pet store with options for them. Eureka and Arcata seem to have a better selection. It would be nice to have local clothing and furniture stores too.... Read 31 reviews

Parent: An excellent Christian private school. For a small school, it offers an amazing diversity of challenging academics/APs for college prep but also student support. The motto is that students come first, and every student is known and loved. The administration aims to support struggling students, & that academic and mental health support been especially important at this time. At the very start of the pandemic, while other schools were scrambling to transition to virtual learning or independent study projects, PacBay seamlessly moved learning online over the course of a weekend. The administration did a great job researching and planning. Students attended classes on campus one day, and smoothly transitioned online the next week to minimize learning loss. As restrictions loosened, and vaccinations rose, the school's done a wonderful job re-opening the campus safely. Esp in a time of uncertainty & anxiety, you want to feel confident about where you send your child to school. We do.... Read 61 reviews

Current Resident: When living in Eureka, it feels like you are not in California anymore! The giant redwood trees tower over neighborhoods and freeways creating a magical environment filled with green. The food diversity ranges for all types of diets, but especially thrives in vegetarian and vegan lifestyles. Most stores are mom and pop shops giving you a "small town feel". The people are always out and about either hiking in our beautiful forests, stopping by at various plant shops in town, or driving to the nearby beaches. The weather hardly ever reaches above 70 degrees fahrenheit as well as rarely dropping below 30 degrees. Therefore, the weather is absolutely perfect. Since this is a small town, about 30,000 people, everything is within a reasonable driving distance, but there are also many bike lanes to get people to and from! If you are looking for a peaceful, tranquil environment, Eureka is for you.... Read 114 reviews

Current Resident: Humboldt hill is a nice place to live. Above the tsunami zone. High enough that sea level rise will never impact your home. You can walk to some nice ocean views. Many artsy houses. The neighborhood is quiet which i really like. Away from the hustle and bustle of downtown but also centrally located for easy access to most job locations in Humboldt County. Eureka is 10 minutes away, Arcata is 20 minutes away, Fortuna is 20 minutes away.... Read 11 reviews

Current Resident: Fortuna is a great small town to raise a family. There are 2 large parks that are perfect for sporting, walks and kids play. One of the parks even has a second growth redwood forest with a beautiful little trail (20 minute hike) that runs through it. In the summer there is a rodeo, a small fair and a car show! There are lots of Apple, plum and cherry trees in the landscaping around town, which makes for a beautiful early spring and fall. The people are friendly and the town is walkable. The only gripe I have is that they need to install more sidewalks on the back streets such as Drake Hill road, to make it more walker friendly. Overall this is a beautiful little town and I love living here.... Read 25 reviews

Current Resident: Lived here for 3 years, and I’m still in awe every single day that I get to live here. Rent’s not bad, it’s finding places that are available that’s tricky. There’s several RV parks, so your best bet would be getting an RV or camper and renting a space. I’ve been all over the country, and I guarantee you won’t find another coastal town more beautiful, peaceful, and amazing than Trinidad!... Read 4 reviews

Current Resident: It's a nice little town with an interesting feel. It feels and is literally quite rural, even compared to the rest of Humboldt county. I grew up here, walking along the river, watching the elk herds migrate through, and riding horses along the trails. You really can't beat the natural wonders this area has to offer. As a rural town, though, there are a few things it lacks, like diversity and the amount of funding a larger town would get. This means that there are smaller things that just have to get overlooked, like the potholes. Overall, I love this town a lot and it's a wonderful area.... Read 2 reviews

Current Resident: Ferndale is the ideal Mayberry type of town. Overall, it's a great little town. Main Street is full of historic Victorian-era buildings, surrounded by lovely farm countryside, backed up by mountains, and only 5 miles from the beach. The climate is very mild year round. Summers are the naturally air-conditioned "English" type where the thermometer struggles to get to 72 degrees. 3 days out of 5, you will have to find a way to get along with the famous Coastal Northern California fog, though, and I feel sorry for the tourists who visit here on those days. I thought this was California? What happened to summer? LOL. Anyway, when we get a sunny day, it is absolutely glorious and all the more appreciated. Tourist tip: get here in the late morning when it's sunny and warm and the fog hasn't blown in yet. Or call the Red Front Store to ask about the weather.... Read 5 reviews

Parent: We’ve been a family at St. Edward School for over 20 years. We have six children & the three older children have graduated from St. Edwards, while our three younger children are currently in fourth, sixth & seventh grades. All three of our older children were accepted into four-year universities after high school graduation. We attribute this, in large part, to their excellent primary education at St. Edwards. I cannot say enough good things about Saint Edward. Like many schools, we have gone through changes over the years, but one thing remains the same. St. Edwards is a wonderful community of families, teachers and staff who promote inclusivity and forward thinking. This coupled with Christian values, makes St Edwards a wonderful place for any student or family. Our children are receiving an excellent education all while learning diversity, inclusivity & compassion. St Edwards also has wonderful sports programs (football, Cheer, volleyball, basketball, soccer) & afterschool clubs.... Read 10 reviews
