Nearby Resident: Kealakekua is a truly beautiful place and the people in it treat each other with Aloha! I have lived near this area for the great majority of my life and I have never had an outstanding bad experience in this community. Most people are willing to help one another, no questions asked. It is unlike a large city in so many ways. People tend to be more patient on the road and aware of what those around them are doing. It's like a big happy family who is sharing and caring towards one another if some on need a shoulder to lean on. Perfect weather, wide open spaces, world class beaches, and not a ton of people. If you like cooler weather, you can live in Waikoloa Village at 1000 feet or even cooler weather in Waimea at 2500 feet. Live in desert like weather on the Gold Coast or venture to the wet side of Waimea where farmers grow a surprising variety of produce. You better have a decent job because it’s about 20% more expensive to live here vs. the West Coast. Be prepared to hop on a plane on a regular basis to get your fix of city life on Oahu or the comfort and familiarity of a huge continent on the Mainland. Other adjustments include; government bureaucracy that makes moving here frustrating and customer service levels that come from employees unconcerned about losing their jobs. There is no sign of city life around, here you will find people living simple, down to earth lives. Here people live in the jungle, surrounded by so much lush greenery, colors, and unique tropical animals (it’s seriously paradise). The people here truly have the aloha spirit. It’s one of the few towns I have found in my travels throughout Hawai’i, where I feel like I’m lost in another world. I have arrived on an island in the middle of no where 100 years from the past. Current Resident: Hawaiian Paradise Park is a pretty peaceful neighborhood. The nights in this district are very quiet. It is also a pretty friendly area. The people here will pretty much greet you with a simple wave, or shaka. This neighborhood is also pretty safe. I rarely hear any violence or any other ominous noise. Unfortunately, the market here is pretty expensive. A lot of the land here is goes up in price. This place is only a neighborhood, so there are no schools here.... Read 12 reviews

Current Resident: Pepeekeo is a small town community on the island of Hawaii. I've lived and grown up here for all of my 23 years. Since it is a smaller community everyone kind of knows everyone and what I love the most is that everyone pretty much looks out for one another. On that note, the hospitality is phenomenal. Every Christmas holiday my neighbors and my family exchange gifts, nothing too expensive, but it became a tradition. However, what I do wish to see is the production of more speed bumps within the community. There are some, but not on all of the streets within the community. For example, on my street we have no speed bumps, but a lot of children around. I believe incorporating speed bumps will benefit the safety of our community and for the children.... Read 6 reviews

Current Resident: Volcano is small, quiet, & friendly. Pros: Its right next to Hawaii Volcanoes Nat. Park. Hiking is nice. It's great for running an Airbnb, and there are more than 250 (when there isn't a pandemic). Houses are surrounded by rainforest. You can bike around the neighborhoods with little traffic. Crime is very low. Cons: There are 3 general stores (2 with gas), a few restaurants and gift shops, a post office, an art center and a community center with a small playground, skate park, and weekly farmer's market. To get groceries you must go to Keauu (30 min) or Hilo (45 min). There is 1 ambulance and the hospital is in Hilo (60 min). Costco and Kona are 2.5 hours away. The Volcano School of Arts and Sciences has an inflated reputation. They treated my daughter poorly and completely derailed the education of my son in Kindergarten, so we had to pull him out and home school him. Without the school it's hard for kids to find friends.
