Neighborhood in Berkeley, CA
Nearby Resident: It's definitely a cultural niche! People from all walks of life come here to attend school, eat good food, or just hang out. There are many thriving small businesses and lots of amazing food. It's pretty touristy, but also not too friendly to the typical resident: housing is expensive and homelessness is sadly a major problem.... Read 4 reviews

Parent: CHA is like a second home to our family. In today’s culture, where many catholic institutions are diluted, CHA is one school with an unwavering commitment to providing an authentic catholic identity. This catholic identity is nurtured through a formation approach that focuses not just on the intellectual dimension but spiritual, human, and apostolic dimension to foster whole-person formation. Sadly, our education system disregards the spiritual dimension so necessary as the true formation of a whole person has to be rooted “in God.” It truly is a gift to have a chapel and daily celebration of the sacraments on campus. CHA also offers formation for parents to help them grow in their faith journey. CHA’s community, honestly speaking, is rare! It is loving, vibrant, supportive, and welcoming. The staff, teachers, and priests are all so dedicated. We are so grateful for the friendships we have made and the love and generosity we have received. We are so proud we belong to CHA!... Current Resident: I've lived in Central Berkeley for 34 years, raising two children through the public schools. Both achieved degrees from top schools, nationally. I love being able to walk to all the best amenities a diverse city has to offer: theatre, restaurants, movies, libraries, parks, public transport, city offices, and yes, my local Y and a Trader Joe's! What's not to love?... Read 13 reviews

Current Resident: This neighborhood gives young professionals and families the best of everything: great food, great access to health and fitness, and friendly people. Walk everywhere or take public transportation, but if you must take your car, you're 5 minutes from the freeway, 10 minutes from the Bay Bridge, and 20 minutes to downtown San Francisco. Berkeley public schools allow your children to meet all kinds of people and exposes them to the world. The teachers are some of the best. MLK Middle School teaches students about cooking and gardening in their edible garden (founded by none other than Alice Waters of Chez Panisse) and Berkeley High has one of the best jazz bands in the country. UC Berkeley is rated the number 1 public university in the world and it's campus is gorgeous for all to visit. Audit classes! The professors are very welcoming. Current Resident: South Berkeley is nice! The residential areas are all pretty, and there are a couple grocery stores and pharmacies. Works Here: First of Berkeley Ca is a very diverse place. It is a place where you can feel free and express yourself without the fear of being judged. The neighborhoods are beautiful and are surrounded with big beautiful green tress. It has a great variety of public schools and we have UC Berkeley in our own back yard! There is always great food around along with friendly people. The great thing about Berkeley its young and welcoming atmosphere. The one thing I would change about it would be the gentrification that is happening. Gentrification takes away a lot of the historical value Berkeley has to offer.... Read 203 reviews

Current Resident: So much good food around here (Cheeseboard!!) & I love how walkable this area is. Restaurants, two large grocery stores, pharmacy, barber, post office, & banks all within a few blocks of my apartment. I always feel safe walking around here too. There are a few “regulars” in terms of homeless but not as bad as downtown or southside. Just a pretty neighborhood as well with lots of greenery and unique buildings. Current Resident: Thousand Oaks gives beautiful bay views, yet is low enough in the hills to be walkable for daily needs. We enjoy walking to Solano for grocery shopping, bagels, lunch, coffee, and so on. It's a short drive to Bart for commuting to San Francisco. As the name implies, the neighborhood is full of trees, particularly above the Alameda. The houses tend to be pretty and architecturally interesting. The population is in transition right now; most residents are older white couples who have owned their homes for decades, but as they sell their homes they are typically bought by young families of diverse backgrounds. I have found the neighborhood friendly and welcoming.... Read 1 review

Parent: We enrolled our son for his junior year in the fall of 2020. We made the decision because the online learning offered by our public school did not work for our son. Fusion staff met with us to determine the appropriate classes to take and even offered and conducted a 'trial' session so our son could get a feel for how it would work. Even though a lot of the year was conducted virtually due to COVID it was still a great experience. One-on-one online classes are very different than one teach and 25-30 students. 5 out of 6 of my son's teachers took the time to really get to know him, understand how he learns and what makes him tick. The teachers are able to connect with students at Fusion in a way that just is not possible in larger environments. (6th teacher was still good and class was a positive experience - there just wasn't the same level of personal connection.)... Read 3 reviews
