Alum: I attended The Williams School (TWS) in Ghent from second to eighth grade. It is without a doubt the most special and most rewarding educational experience I have had throughout my academic career which, to date, spans an undergraduate degree and a graduate degree. Small class sizes foster deep, long-lasting connections with peers, teachers, and other faculty and stimulate creative learning across the board. Faculty at TWS truly go above and beyond for each student and work tirelessly to make sure each student's individual needs are met. Their dedication builds a level of trust in other and in self that further empowers students to be proactive not only in their education, but also in their personal and social development. TWS provides extracurricular opportunities during a pivotal developmental period that, at larger schools, students may frankly not have the opportunity to fully experience (athletics, forensics, music); students are completely immersed. Truly a magnificent school!... Read 9 reviews

Niche User: Living in central Des Moines was a great opportunity for me. It will always be home no matter where "home" ends up changing to over the years. The atmosphere is wonderful. I live close to Downtown Des Moines, where there is always something going on. Also, I live not too far from the beautiful Gray's Lake and Water Works Park which are major attractions for walking. It has beautiful landscape.... Read 2 reviews

Current Resident: Beaverdale has a charm to it with the old brick homes and lovely gardens. Most of the people in the neighborhood are friendly. I would say there is not really much of a night life besides a few bars but quite a few good restaurants. While we love and are thankful for the teachers at our children’s school, DMPS as a whole isn’t great. Homes tend to be more expensive as this is a sought after neighborhood. It’s been a good place to raise our family up until now.... Read 14 reviews

Current Resident: I love how Coralville is building more homes and newer developments. I have been living here for over a year now and I am always seeing new business and restaurants to explore. With these new business comes more job opportunities in the area. More people are moving to Coralville to encourage growth. The area is very safe and I feel comfortable in my home. Commute time to the university of Iowa is around 12 minutes and there are multiple routes to take if traffic occurs. However, the water quality could use some upgrading. Overall the area is above market price due to the accessibility to the University and quality of lif.e... Read 50 reviews

Parent: Des Moines is a safe, clean, family friendly place to live. The schools are academically challenging. Many colleges are located here and in the suburbs. Employment opportunities exist for all socioeconomic levels. It is a diverse city in that we are accepting of refugees and immigrants. The city offers nightlife as well as arts and cultural events. We have our own Symphony, ballet, choirs. Summertime offers many free festivals downtown as well as ticketed events. we have a nationally recognized state fair. We also are within driving distance of many bigger cities such as Chicago, Minneapolis and Kansas City. I would rank this area 8 out of 10. Good quality of life, but slow paced vs a bigger city.... Niche User: I love my neighborhood. It's safe. I know most of my neighbors. I have played with the neighbor kids and their pets. My neighbors have also helped me find my dog before. My house is also a good distance from the elementary, middle, and high school I went to so it was easy to walk, ride my bike, or drive when needed. I hope to see my neighborhood grow a little bit. I also hope the education system gets better and pushes more students to their full potential.... Read 28 reviews

Current Resident: It is exactly what one would expect from a smaller suburb of a medium city. There is a community presence, but the community itself is not overwhelmingly close-knit. Niche User: Iowa City is a college town like no other! Due to its size, you feel like an individual within a community, rather than a number. The environment and its inhabitants are full of life, color, diversity, and unity. There is a sense that you belong, which is invaluable to anyone fresh out of high school. Great care and appreciation is given toward the city's students, artists, businesses, and general residents. There is always something going on, something to be a part of, and something to look forward to. Might I also add that there is not a more walkable city in all of Iowa?... Read 324 reviews

Current Resident: I like Fairfield because it's not too big or small. It is the perfect size for me and has a lot more small businesses, which is another highlighted preference of mine. Parent: My daughter has been attending BISW since nursery due to our well regarded public school remaining close during the pandemic. We’re in Primary now and we simply love the school and have no plans to leave despite having a local and good public option. Staff at BISW are competent, kind, responsive and the school is well organized. Clear and constant communication from teachers and administrators is the norm. The curricula is strong and very focused on child literacy. My child is thriving. As others have mentioned, the facilities are not grand, but given the small classes and school size they certainly make good use of the space. Classrooms are well appointed. A new gym being built. I feel that there is PLENTY of racial and ethnic diversity, since BISW attracts embassy and international families. I’ve met people from all around the world.... Read 16 reviews
