Current Resident: I was born and raised in Newport. Left after college and came back for retirement. It is perfect. We can walk everywhere, tons of things to do all seasons. Have met new friends in addition to re-kindling old friendships. We get lots of visitors in the summer and the restaurants are phenomenal. It is the place where everyone knows your name because people work in the same job for years. The cleaners, tailors, tellers, grocery store folks, tellers, drugstore clerks, shop owners - you get to know them and they get to know you. Don’t believe what people are saying about the weather - temps are moderate because of the ocean, some snow days which may require shoveling but the sun melts a lot of it. Not a lot of rain and beach days are plentiful. It is expensive to rent or buy, this is true. However, if you can manage to compromise a little on lifestyle it is so worth it. Current Resident: The College Hill area is home to students from RISD and Brown University. There are many restaurants in the area, in particular on Wickenden Street, Thayer Street and South Main Street. There are also many bars and great spots for a drink. College Hill is close to Downcity Providence, which also has many restaurants and bars/clubs. As well as residential homes, College Hill has dorms and apartments that students rent. Current Resident: Middletown is very child friendly. The population is very diverse and is close with neighboring towns; Newport and Portsmouth. It is beautiful in the summer and a good distance away from the Newport summer tourist rush. The traffic can be intense along with the potholes but it all may be worth it. This town has its pros and cons but so does every other. The public schools are great but not much when in comparison to Portsmouth. However, income and housing prices is steady and not as overwhelming in comparison to neighboring towns. The people are friendly and the accents are enjoyable. Current Resident: To me, Hope is the casual Blackstone, second highest home ownership in Providence, second highest income in Providence (both after Blackstone) people are friendly, kids can comfortably walk the streets and dogs are abundant. There have been a lot of people from the Boston Area / Massachusetts that have moved in recently and many home renovations have followed. The one downside to Hope is that North Main street could use some work but there is an official committee working on that and the plans are very very promising. Former Resident: Providence is by far the most diverse place I’ve ever lived in. I lived in Federal Hill for three years, and Smith Hill for several months- also have family in Elmwood. As I was told upon moving, Providence is more of a series of distinct neighborhood than one city, characterized by different ethnicities- of which there are many! The entire socioeconomic spectrum is represented here. Lots of poverty, crime and drugs, or lots of gentrification, boutique shops and expensive restaurants, depending on where you’re at- which switches on a nearly block basis at times. Speaking of food, you can hardly do better than Providence! It is somewhat of a cultural hub, and a high density of higher education. Jobs are relatively hard to come by, and wages often do not match the relatively high cost of living- which has increased dramatically in recent times. Current Resident: I love the community in the West End. Everyone is pleasant, support local businesses, commute in eco-friendly ways, and even purchase produce locally! There is a co-op grocery store in the center of the neighborhood that sources from local farms that I love. I've been able to enjoy a sit down breakfast that's pet-friendly, and visit a beautiful gated dog park only a 15 minute walk from my house, all in the same trip. The farmer's market at the nearby park is a favorite way to spend my Thursday afternoons, where I get to meet tons of producers that most are located less than 30 minutes away from the market. The neighborhood has two high schools that advocate art programs, as well as a bustling and artistic after school program across the street from the schools. Since I bike to work, I utilize the neighborhood bike shop that offers quality products and advice; there's also place nearby that offers hands on lessons. Current Resident: I love my town of Bristol. It's small, safe, beautiful, and has just enough things located around it. I grew up here and I think it's an amazing place to raise kids and a family and I wouldn't change a thing about it. The only downfall is the lack of diversity and experience growing up in such a small town. I wish I was able to not be so sheltered and constantly surrounded by the same people. Current Resident: This is a predominately white affluent suburb of Providence with mostly highly educated younger, family oriented adults (generally speaking). There is little crime here. Taxes are very high for the quality of services you receive. The schools, despite the ratings, leave a lot to be desired. I would expect newer more modern schools with a lot of extracurricular activities. The location is excellent though, easy commute north or south of Providence, waterfront in town, cute Main Street and shops, airport and train station (Boston) is 10-12 minutes away. Healthcare services and jobs are in town or an easy commute to Warwick, Providence, or South County. It is, in my opinion, the best location to live in the State for convenience and raising a family. Niche User: I feel that the area I live in is nice, however there are some surrounding areas that are a little bit unsafe. But that's true for any place that people live. I live in the suburbs of Providence and it has a very peaceful atmosphere to it. There's a high school near by, kids playing outside, people exercising, and people walking their dogs. The downtown area Providence is very lively. There's a mall, plenty of restaurants, as well as activities for the public to take part in, such as Water Fire and parades.
