Current Resident: Great place to live, but traffic getting in and out of the area is bad. Good restaurants starting to come into the area. Still not terribly horrible traffic going to Dripping Springs for less stressful retail options. West Oak Hill is just far away enough that you feel like you're in the Hill Country but close enough to Austin to enjoy and suffer through city life.... Read 24 reviews

Works Here: Over 40 years of living all over Austin, Allandale is easily my favorite! Great people, great schools, great lifestyle (restaurants, parks, shops, grocery, bars, etc), and quick easy commutes to Downtown to South or Domain/Aboretum/MLS Stadium and so much more to North. Former Resident: I lived here during my college years. Unconventional from living on campus or near campus but it was worth it because this neighborhood was a heavenly oasis. A home I made my own. Within walking distance of River Stone Ranch my old apartment complex, I could reach a whole 6+ mile walking trail. Which is a totally separate walking trail from the Whole Foods nearby. If I didn't feel like spending a ton on groceries, the beloved HEB Texas grocery store is right down the road. Truly a wonderful distance from University/Downtown, while letting me escape the bustle of it all. I miss this place so much, just thinking about it takes my breath away. Current Resident: There are copious amounts of greenery and wildlife in the area. Some of the roads go through a tunnel of trees, it's so beautiful. The neighbors are sweet and considerate of others. Current Resident: This is a vibrant neighborhood in the best part of the city, with really good schools, eclectic and fun neighborhoods, and access to the best social and cultural aspects of central Austin. It's far enough from downtown to be out of the frenzy, but close enough that residents can walk or bike to work on the hike and bike trails. Young family are everyplace, with top schools at all levels. South Lamar's hot restaurant scene is right in your lap, and you're a short walk from Barton Springs and Zilker Park. Current Resident: Highland is a great neighborhood. My wife and I have been in Highland for just over a year. The neighborhood is changing fast, sometimes for the good (demolishing uninhabitable houses) and sometimes for the bad (knocking down perfectly good 1100 sq foot homes) to build redundant white duplexes with black trim. It is very safe and has a good mix of long-time residents and young professionals in Austin “starter” homes lol. The prices are high like all of Austin but much more reasonable than Allandale and Brentwood which we share basically every amenity with. The neighborhood is close to 290, I-35, Airport, Lamar and Burnet but is quiet overall for an urban neighborhood. None of the roads run directly through the neighborhood so noise is light. The close proximity to the Red Line is nice and for Austin I would say the neighborhood is semi-walkable. Close enough to some coffee shops, bars and restaurants to walk to but the neighborhood still requires a car to live in I would say.... Read 7 reviews
