Visitor: I visited Richmond recently to scout it out, as my girlfriend and I are planning on moving here. I was pleasantly surprised! There is an INCREDIBLE amount of history here. Yes, much of it has to do with it being the capital of the Confederacy, but even those statues are being taken down. I like to see the people of Richmond organizing in this way.
The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts punches way above its weight, and there are beautiful buildings and parks to walk around. It's a geographically small city and it's pretty easy to get around it. There is definitely a lot of cool nightlife, as well.
Richmond is also only 1.5 hours from both mountains and beaches, which is great!
Having said that, one of the biggest issues is crime and poverty. The North and South sides of Richmond are very rough. I'm not even just talking about for us visitors and future residents, but also for the people who actually live there.
Overall though, it's pretty cool, and has much potential!
