#151 Best Cities to Raise a Family in America
- City in Florida
Current Resident: In my experience, Jacksonville is the most forgiving city in the world. After my parents immigrated to the United States of America with less than $1,000, Jacksonville has taken care of them. Being raised in the community has Americanized myself with the youth of this country. I have become one with my community and wish to see more projects to develop the young city's youth. With proper educational institutions and proper life opportunities to express creativity, the youth of this city will thrive and make a better place in Jacksonville, Florida, United States of America and countless countries beyond!

Current Resident: Buffalo is a city full of possibility and adventure! No matter the weather, you will always be able to find something fun to do. In the winter you will find a number of winter time festivals taking place, as well as the downtown ice skating rink that almost makes you feel as though you're in a hallmark movie. During the fall you can shop around for the perfect pumpkin while sipping on warm apple cider drinks. The food in Buffalo is like no other! It is unique to the area and absolutely to die for! If you're bored in Buffalo, you aren't doing Buffalo right!

Current Resident: I’ve lived in Salem since I was four years old. I love the weather, I love that I’m an hour away from Portland, about two hours from Bend, and an hour away from Lincoln beach. We just got an ice-skating rink last year, a new ice cream shop, tons of sushi joints, and an abundance of cute vintage/ antique/ thrift stores. We’re hip (not as hip as Portland), very stylish, and super positive, outdoorsy, and caring! I love Salem and it’s the place to be especially if you’re looking for a little oomph in your life.

Current Resident: Worcester is an amazing town filled with a great diversity of people from all over the globe. As a Worcester public school student, it is so interesting to meet new people and learn about a variety of different cultures and ethnicities. Aside from it's diversity, Worcester is filled with a multitude of entertaining activities. These activities range from going to the local Worcester Red Sox game to enjoying a meal at a restaurant of your choosing on Shrewbury Street. Worcester is truly a great city to live in and I am so glad I grew up here!

Current Resident: Hampton is FULL of amenities! It's not a very big city, but everything you need is in close range. It's extremely convenient. My only real concern are the panhandlers. There are signs everywhere explaining not to encourage panhandling and to call the number listed. However, "homeless" individuals continuously stand right under the sign begging for money, and drivers that pass by continue to cater to them.

Current Resident: Santa Rosa, California has been my hometown since my birth. Growing up Santa Rosa has been drastically changed. As a child I remember lots of empty acres of land available for sale. But today, Santa Rosa is huge with some many diverse cultures. You can get some of the best local food here in Santa Rosa. Feeling like taking a Cruze? You can take the back roads and enjoy a beautiful afternoon cruzing their the vineyards and the distant hills. Even though these recent fires have divested many and I personally. Santa Rosa has not stopped working and will continue to become a better place to live. I hope own day when I reach retirement age to come back to Santa Rosa and spend the rest of my life here! SANTA ROSA STRONG!

Current Resident: Warren is a large city with many things going on. There is a divide between the north and south and I believe that to be due to the local government. The city square area and community centers are plentiful and have much to offer. However, a lot of it is senior age centered. There are plenty of chain retail stores but also a lot of mom and pop companies which makes it nice for me to get that personal service aspect. The school system to dwindling due to the lower enrollment in public schools . The charter schools are hurting the entire public system. It is a large area city and the roads seem to be always under construction

Nearby Resident: Billings is a city that has everything. There are two universities for higher education. There are so many businesses that provide job opportunities. There are sports attractions from college to semi pro. There are many beautiful places surrounding Billings for hikers and bikers. I have been attending Montana State University in Billings for the last year and it has been a great experience. I have gotten to know many of the teacher and staff at MSUB and they are very willing to help the students in any way that they can. I recommend MSUB to others, especially those majoring in education. The education department bends over backward to help students!

Current Resident: Killeen is a decent place to live. There are several different types of restaurants, from Greek to Ethiopian. As a military based community. Most residents are helpful and look after each other. Sidewalks throughout the neighborhood make walking kids to and from school much easier. I would like to see more family friendly activities in the community, with better advertisement of such events. There are tons of parks in the area, which is a great bonus.

Current Resident: Contrary to popular belief, there are some very wonderful activities for families and people in general.
Many of us in the community are cultured and creative from Art, to Music, to Food ect and if you look there are really eclectic and cool venues for most of those things!

Current Resident: Peoria is a lovely river town that always has something to do if you know where to look. There is a thriving local music scene that has taken off over the last few years and includes free concerts, local music festivals, and much more. There is also festivals along the riverfront that celebrate the diversity of the local area. Peoria is also a lovely city to run in. There are many races that take place all year all over the city! The Steamboat race is a famous four mile race that draws talent from all over the world! In the months leading up to it, participants can participate in Building Steam which helps runners build the strength to run the race. Another great part about the race is that literally ANYONE can do it. Access Steam makes the course accessible to people with mental or physical disabilities and there are many different groups for people to train in for Building Steam.

Current Resident: Living in Visalia, California has been a unique and fun experience for me! Visalia is in the heart of the Central Valley, which means one of our biggest industries here is agriculture. I am proud to know that my area helps feed 70% of the world's population! There are plenty of things to do in Visalia. Many families with young children like to host birthday parties at local entertainment venues such as Adventure Park, or Quantum Leap Extreme Air Sports! Popular restaurants include Outback Steakhouse, Five Guys, Fugazzis, the Vintage Press Restaurant, and Alejandra's Restaurant! Most importantly, educational opportunities are very good in Visalia. Visalia has many different K-8 schools, preschools, and high schools. High schools of Visalia include El Diamante High School, Redwood High School, Golden West High School, and Mt. Whitney High School!

Current Resident: Miami is an amazing city because you will never get bored here! There are so many things to do like museums, concerts, festivals, restaurants, theatres, and so much more. If you have a family and are interested in schools in Miami, there is such a great variety of schools and Coral Gables has a highly recommended elementary school that your kid can attend even if you live in Miami: Sunset Elementary. It is part of Miami Dade County! The only thing that isn't as satisfactory to me is the fact that in some areas of Miami there isn't a bid diversity of people; most are Cubans. If you are looking for a more diverse community I would recommend researching the different areas of Miami!

Current Resident: South Bend has a mix of beautiful architecture throughout the city--Art Deco, Gothic Revival, Queen Anne style homes and many bungalow and Cape Cod style homes from the 1940s.
River Park is an up-and-coming, walkable neighborhood with houses for sale that can accommodate almost any budget or taste. The main street has a maker space, a non-profit coffee house, a zoo (!) a library, and several other shops and eateries, specialty food stores, plus a fantastic farmers' market just west on Mishawaka Avenue that has been running since the early 20th century.
You could do much worse than to live here. River Park is affordable, relaxed and friendly, but with so many family-friendly activities either within walking distance or a short, ten minute-drive.

Current Resident: Las Vegas has the largest performing arts programs in schools in the nation. Jobs in the arts are growing, making Las Vegas a suitable place to pursue one's passions. Nightlife is stellar. Those in the event planning, interior design, hospitality, and business fields thrive on the nightlife. Housing and overall affordability is comparable, especially for those coming from other major cities, like California, Seattle, New York, Boston, and Chicago. Gyms, big box health food stores, and outdoor activities (rock climbing, hiking, triathlons, soccer, and other clubs) are very accessible!

Current Resident: The city of Mobile, Alabama is one of the most historical and exciting cities in America. From the Battleship, to the multiple Forts, Mardi Gras, and Antebellum Museums, Mobile offers a well rounded view and history of the sweet south. This history rich city will never fail you. Our summers are filled with fairs, celebrations, seafood tastings, athletic runs, and community events!

Port St. Lucie
- City in Florida
Visitor: We are planning a vacation there this June. I just wanted to post on many of the comments on nothing to do there. My wife and I are avid hikers, bikers, swimmers, and fisherman. I find that in an area with limited attractions like Disney world, many people who's idea of things to do include shopping eating, and amusement parks equate lack of these as nothing to do. Get out and smell the fresh air!

- City in Louisiana
Current Resident: New Orleans is a city with rich roots and traditions. The diversity and culture in New Orleans are unmatched. The hospitality of the people that reside in New Orleans is extremely welcoming and genuine. The food is amazing! I would not want to live anywhere else. New Orleans truly is a melting pot of cultures. Music is a big part of the city, the jazz bands are vivid and entertaining in the french quarter. You will never get bored in the city. It may be difficult to stay away from the nightlife since Bourbon street is so intriguing! I would like to see the safety improve in the city. The high amount of poor people in the city also is disheartning.

Current Resident: Brownsville, Texas has the freedom to a beach coast and an island that can bring in more tourist. The city also has a zoo for people who prefer family-friendly places. There is a lot of notable history in Brownsville and its very much underrated. Brownsville needs to understand that it could be better since its also a border town to Matamoros, Tampulias Mexico; I believe that if there were more hotspots for the young adults, family oriented business were to move here, Brownsville could possibly be the new San Francisco. We even have SpaceX with Elon Musk! How cool is that? We just need to improve and polish here and there, so that tourist and Browsvillians enjoy their time in the city.

- City in Rhode Island
Current Resident: I have lived in Providence all my life with spending only two years living in another state. To be honest, I just love Providence and how everything is always so easily accessible. You can drive throughout the state within an hour and still be able to have enough time to do a historical tour in Providence. We may be a small state, but we are known for some of the oldest historical buildings and history. Along with some of the best schools in the country: Rhode Island School of Design and Brown University. And not to mention the cultural diversity of this city is so diverse its hard not to meet someone who is of a different ethnicity. The food is amazing and the people here are great! The ocean; as I like to say is literally two minutes away from my childhood home and you are bound to have a blast if you decide to come visit or live in Providence.

Current Resident: Oakland is a diverse, resilient, and vibrant community. The city’s love for art and social justice is evident- there are murals on every block! Folks instill the beauty and power of art into their children and build social gatherings around it (i.e. Oakland Art & Wine Festival, Mural Festivals, Art Walks, and more!). It can be expensive to live here. The Tech Bubble has yet to burst, and unfortunately many Natives are slowly being pushed out farther and farther into the East Bay. Still, the folks who remain here aren’t going down without a fight. They support local businesses and they care deeply about EVERYONE in their city. They are the nicest people you will ever meet.

Current Resident: Columbus is a great place to live! There is a wonderful mix of suburbs and city life. The downtown area has a lot to offer like market days every Saturday morning, festivals just about every month and during the summer, they host a summer concert series that is absolutely free every Friday night. We also have a great job market. With big companies like TSYS, Aflac and Synovus headquarters here, there is always an entry level job available. The only concern I feel most people have is the crime rate. We have had an increase in crime/shootings these past two years but these are usually areas of common gang activity and can be avoided mostly.

Current Resident: St. Louis has some very interesting landmarks with character all their own. The Arch for instance, breathtaking as it is unique, I promise you won't find another like it! Another one of my personal favorites would have to be the Busch Stadium. I'm a huge Cardinals fan, so it just tickles me how nicely they've remodeled it.
Unfortunately there was a second part to this question which was, "what would you change?" The major problem here is violence. I know that sounds scary but before you totally ex St. Louis off your bucket list I would keep in mind there's good and bad in every bigger city. We have heart! We have motivated individuals, myself included that are making a change each day. Showing sympathy and compassion or offering aid to someone less fortunate. These small tasks heal our communities in a big way.

Current Resident: There are many things I admire about my community but one thing that I value the most is the community we have at Everett High School. This community provides many opportunities for people of color to feel welcome. However, when I first came to Everett High School I was disappointed by the fact that the whole school did not celebrate diversity. International Student Organization was the only club that promotes diversity. Annually, this club presents small events to celebrate diversity but it was not an event that was well known. I wanted to take a part in making it better and help students see that Everett High cares about every single ethnicity. Even though I have difficulties talking to many people I felt the passion to step out of my comfort zone and advocate ethnic differences.

Current Resident: I love Philly! Born and raised here, the city has so much offer that I completely appreciate much more now that I'm an adult. The public school system sucks. However, there are thousands of surrounding area schools that are private, public, and faith-based. The city is also very family friendly! There are plenty of activities for younger children and even teenagers. There's always some form of activity going on in Center City, so your kids will never be bored. Chestnut Hill is also a great area for families. That section of Philly is near Mt. Airy, Flourtown, Plymouth Whitemarsh, and Roxborough.
For adults, there are hundreds of bars and clubs for you to go to. Again, you can never be bored in the city of Philadelphia. From different cheesesteak spots to fine dining, Philadelphia has something to offer for all tastebuds. Job opportunities are lucrative as someone is ALWAYS hiring, whether it's your ideal job or not.
