The thing I love about Sarasota the most is all the culture the city has. Sarasota is a very beautiful, artsy, safe, and thriving city. Their are so many new things that are being built in Sarasota which include the the bay front redevelopment project, the quay development which will bring many more exciting restaurants and shops to the area, the Selby botanical gardens redevelopment, the siesta key promenade, and the east district at the Utc mall which will bring even more entertainment options to the area. The best thing about Sarasota is all of the local beaches such as the #1 best beach in America siesta key. Lido key and longboat key are other world class beaches in the area. Another thing I love about Sarasota is that it is relatively close to major cities such as Tampa (1 hour away) and Orlando ( 2 hours and 20 minutes away). Even Disney is close, only about 1 hour and 45 minutes away. All in all, I believe Sarasota is the best city in Florida to live in.
Sarasota is a city with amazing weather and incredible potential. It has white sand beaches, decent sea-food, and a thriving local art scene. My biggest concern, however, is one that I have with all of coastal Florida, too much of its revenue is based on attracting tourists with its beaches. This would be all fine and dandy if there were better legislation in place to protect the coastal wildlife, but because of many natural disasters exacerbated by locals and corporations (see the 18-month Red Tide event in 2018) that have led to the closing of many small local businesses that were otherwise flourishing. Also the traffic is catastrophic, par for the course in Florida, I know, but for some reason the construction of additional roundabouts in high-traffic areas is underway without much consideration for the capabilities of local drivers. And if you don't have a car, forget about it. Unless you live at the epicenter of the city, it's an hour long affair to run any kind of errand.
Sarasota is anazing overall, especially for those that are retired. Between the climate, beaches, and attractions, Sarasota is a beautiful city. Living in Sarasota is a lot like being on a continual vacation. The only characteristics I would change about the city would be increasing age and race diversity, and reducing the traffic during “snow bird” season. There is also some wealth disparity, illustrated by the homelessness problem. Other than that, the value of Sarasota is definitely increasing between investment in the home industry, the quality public schools, and the substantial funding that keeps Sarasota well-kept. I also appreciate the art and culinary scene in Sarasota with the Ringling College of Art and Design, museums, and many restaurants show casing different types of cuisine. The low crime rates in Sarasota, also are appealing for families especially.
