It's an adorable small town hurting for a place on the map. If you're a fan of the outdoors, this is the landscape for you.
The schools are awful. They use the special ed progran to embezzle money and keep special needs students down. My autistic brother, with no learning disability, didn't learn how to read until we changed schools. He was in middle school!

I like the town overall, but despite being surrounded by farmland, Saranac itself is something of a food desert when the farmer's market isn't running. There are two gas stations and a dollar general, making it hard to find fresh, affordable food without travelling to either Ionia or Lowell, each about a 20 minute drive from the village. Though the town is quite quaint and family friendly, there is a striking lack of diversity, which can bring out some really unfortunate behavior from people, who are largely older, white, and conservative, at times to the point of outright bigotry. I think Saranac is making steps in the right direction, and the few businesses there seem to be doing well, but it still is somewhat stuck in a rut and has a long way to go yet.
This small town is really a great community where most people know each other and help to support others in the town, including small businesses.
