Santa Monica is a very peaceful coastal city. It has extensive beautiful beaches, a pier, a boardwalk, and borders the neighborhood of Venice. Santa Monica is a great place to walk with spacious parks, cafes, galleries, and restaurants. We have a unique school system with an abundance of options depending on which part of the city you occupy. I give it four stars because Santa Monica lacks diversity and is very expensive. Because of skyrocketing rent prices, small and historical businesses are shut down left and right and replaced by luxury and novelty goods shops that most cannot afford.
Santa Monica used to be the perfect place to live: low crime, family friendly, many parks, lots to do, small friendly community, etc — this was when rent control allowed most people earning even a minimum wage job to live in a Santa Monica apartment. Since getting rid of rent control many people have been left broke and on the streets and crime has increased, a huge failure on the city’s part and state’s part. However Santa Monica still is a good place to be to get away from the rest of SoCal’s insane heat and although tourism has increased way too much for the city to handle in recent years it’s still a nice place to live (if you can afford it or find roommates to split the costs with).
I love Santa Monica because it’s my home, where I grew up. I love being near the beach and family. I live that we have a lit of shopping available as well as different job opportunities. Some issues are affordability because it is expensive to live here, too expensive. Also, the crime rate has gone up- I was at work and someone tried to steal the tip jar. Some people are desperate for money and there are a lot of homeless. I hope we can change the homeless rate and crime rate around. Even though I feel safe, many others don’t. Sometimes even I don’t because one of my neighbors is unpredictable and become violent just for walking on the sidewalk next to his house, or even park on the street. The citizens need to be able to feel safe walking around in a city they call home and not looking over their shoulders every day.
