Overall Sanford is an enjoyable place to live. Downtown has a lot of potential, it is very cute and walkable. However, after living here for a period of time we’ve learned most of the shops/restaurants/breweries down there close SO early. I don’t know if it’s a southern thing or a small town/Sanford thing. That being said, there is NO night life. Thankfully it’s close enough to the cities (Raleigh, Durham, Cary), but less hustle and bustle. It’s also a short drive to Southern Pines and Pinehurst, which have even cuter downtown districts that actually stay open late! Personally I enjoy that area more, but the cost of housing is significantly less in Sanford—so it’s a sacrifice. We have heard some rumors of gang/drug/crime activity and dangers of being around certain streets late at night, but personally I have not risked it and have not experienced that.
Sanford isn't the worst place in the world to live, but it isn't the healthiest either. Many town residents have a long, deep history of drug use and abuse. It is very easy to fall into the wrong crowd in Sanford. Unless your family already has connections, it can be very hard to work your way into a successful career. The best route to a successful career, without connections, in Sanford is to leave Sanford. There is much more than just Sanford and all residents of Sanford need to have the experience of leaving it to explore other cities and cultures.
Sanford is a small town that is experiencing uncommon growth during an economically challenging time due to forthought from its political leaders. It's centrally located among the cities of Raleigh-Durham, Fayetteville, and Greensboro, so Sanford has abundant employment opportunities within a one-hour distance. Sanford is ethnically diverse with a significant hispanic population. For a small city of about 30,000, Sanford has healthcare services that are able to handle its population for primary care needs through Central Carolina Hospital and its outlying clinics. Residents are able to further their education or re-training at the local community college while enjoying a very short commuting distance.
