San Jose is an okay place to live. However with the rising homeless population and crime rate in the city, it has become incredibly unsafe. There is also a shortage in cops. Everything is so expensive that people are resorting to other means to just survive. Because of this, it is incredibly unsafe on the streets now.
Dirty, over-priced, dismal, depressing.
If you're wealthy I suppose it's fabulous but if you're middle-middle class and below it blows!!
So basically if you're single earn at least $225k a year and you're good.

It's not bad but it's ratchet people around here act so inhumane and so high major that it causes them to think they belong in a rich city when they should learn to humble themselves for where they live since they know what it's like not having much.
It's depressing and self-righteous. Huge homeless population and no one does anything to fix it. Smells terrible.
Way, way, way, way, too expensive to live if you are still in college. I was born and raised in this area and I can no longer stay here. I am wondering if I will even be able to finish school at this level. San Jose is a nice place but too crowded. I want out!
I hate San Jose this is the worst place to live now it's way over priced and traffic is garbage it's a hell hole to live here.
The good news is that there are a ton of jobs here, the bad news is that the cost of living here is very very high. The crime is a problem with houses being broken into very regularly. There is also a very large homeless population that is usually drinking or doing drugs in public spaces. They camp out in public parks and are very aggressive. The police never act with any urgency and it usually takes them hours to arrive if you have to call them. The schools can be okay in some suburbs, but many places they are very poor. The commute is probably one of the worst in the nation if you have to drive north in the morning.
Living in San Jose: unless you are making bank (in which case you are probably not living in SJ), it is very hard to justify the cost and congestion of this city. Traffic is terrible, stores have huge lines even at night, things aren't well kept and rent for 40-year old 1 bedroom with paper-thin walls and community washers/dryers costs over $2K a month (and that's not any place good). People for the most part aren't nice or good looking, but some of them are very smart. There are some cool places nearby (Santa Cruz, Monterey, etc) but you have to sit through a ton of traffic to get there. and back. In my opinion, some people are simply here because of jobs and others just don't know any better... On the other hand, visiting San Jose area could be a cool experience
Born and raised in San Jose. I hate it here. It used to be very nice, I always felt safe. Now t just feels like a big town, full of angry people, and they’re all in a hurry to get no where. The cost of living is ridiculous. Most of the people my age (in their 20’s) have 2, if not 3, jobs just to afford to live here. My wife and I can’t wait to move out of San Jose.
Cost of living and sad homeless and dirty conditions 2 blocks and on south of downtown make it depressing. Great place to live North of downtown if you're a Doctor, Lawyer or NBA celebrity. No joke- medium rental price $1700 for a studio! $1200 to rent a room. There are so many lower crime more affordable gorgeous places to live away from this rat race!!
San Jose is a very multicultural city with a flat range of positive and negative characteristics to deem the city as simply mediocre. The city itself thrives on it's diversity of people, with individuals from all backgrounds residing within it's walls. By venturing near downtown, safety and healthy living are diminished, and the city becomes a dichotomy between student life at SJSU and the low socioeconomic areas. Despite the lack of safety, it has become a destination spot for locals to embrace the nightlife, with a descent atmosphere. The job opportunities are developing, much like the real estate market. The worst part of the lifestyle within the city would be the commute, where the city has become overpopulated and the streets are continuously impacted with traffic, which will ultimately lead to a decline in healthy air flow and a potential increase in traffic collisions. Overall, the city deserves a 6/10.
The city has many parks, that aren't well kept or have good activities, and destination areas, you have to either be a patron or purchase goods to be able to stay. The city feels like it cares more about its commuters than it does its residents; which would make me think twice about even taking a job in this area.
The city gets two stars for being my hometown but believe me, it's nothing what it was like before. Crime ridden, mean people, and gentrified are three traits of the new San Jose!
